EGR question within ...

I have posted in another topic, my cars' condition (another problem when hot).

Well I got an SES light and it came up as code #32 (EGR recirculation).

My question is:

Does this mean I need to replace the EGR valve, EGR solenoid, and/or the gas feed pipe ?

Thanks to shoebox for the info and pictures on his site.
Thanks to Fred (Injuneer) for his site as well and for insight into the LT1, as a whole!

My 94 Z28 has 95K and is an A4.
I noticed my problem first while at our local track one night (several months ago). When I build it up to powerbrake, it might or it might not (sputtering usually starts).
At the staging lanes, I will hold the car ready for launch. When the light turns green, it will die out for 1 or 2 seconds (sputtering) and then come back up to power and do fine (except near 6K rpms, sometimes).
The car does fine in normal driving conditions, hot or cold (not a daily driver).

In the last 8K miles or so, I have replaced (probably needed doing anyway, 100K mile tune up ):

coil (factory)
plugs (NGK tr-55)/wires (taylor 8mm)
o2s (GM)-(however,one was Bosch with 40K or so and the other was factory)
new fuel filter (again).

Do you think it could be just an EGR problem or possibly more?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Re: EGR question within ...

I got the exact same error code, im trying to figure out...

For starters you could manualy open the EGR Valve with the engine running, is it suposed to sputter when you manualy open the valve, and as soon as you let go it should go back to a normal idel. If it dosent chances are your EGR Valve is bad, you can try cleaning it first before buying a new one.

Re: EGR question within ...

My friend that coded it for me also hooked up a hose and a hand-held trigger mechanism (gadget) with a gauge on it, but it did not hold pressure.

Not sure if we were doing it right or not though . The car was off.

Re: EGR question within ...

Get a new EGR and the code will go away. Your old one is not opening when it should (normal wear) or its passing air when it should not. The MAP sensor picks up on this and throws the code. You can remove the EGR but most likely you will still get the SES and code. I recently installed a MADZ28 mail tune and had the EGR function disabled so I wont have to ever see an EGR SES code ever again. I have had three EGR's on my car from day one.

It's broken, then. Using the hand held vacuum tester, it should have held vacuum and opened the valve.

Re: EGR question within ...

Thanks guys for the info.

Should I get a GM valve or would one from most any parts store be OK ?

Local GM store quoted me $85 or there about.

The parts store may be ok. You could get a GM one from these guys at about half that price. Keep them in mind when you need GM parts.

Re: EGR question within ...

I'd just block it off and run no egr. One less thing to break and it will run fine. Also it seems like you race it more then drive it, I'd say ditch it. Search the board for EGR blockoff plates, you can block it off and your good. If you want the SES to go away, get it programmed out. I don't know if your exhaust is stock but u might want to get the AIR deleted out while your PCM is out if you want to gut your cats or get an offroad pipe.

Re: EGR question within ...

If I get the egr tuned out, do I have to put the blockoff plate over the egr valve or/and the exhaust gas feed pipe ? What do I remove?

Also, can LT1 edit delete this for me?

I think I know another guy that has LT1 edit.

Just to inform you of exhaust stuff, I have stock manifolds but a SLP y-pipe and Random Tech. cat. (gutted, it broke apart inside) with a flowmaster muffler.

In your case, I'd get the blockoff plates. They block the EGR hole in the back of the intake AND the block off the manifold holes. You remove the EGR valve, the vacuum line, and the solenoid if you want(you can leave that to)

Since you don't have a cat, why don't u pull off the AIR pump and get that programmed out, no need for it.

And yes, you can do all this in LT1 edit.

Hope that helps.

Do a search on that stuff, then come to your own conclusion.

Re: EGR question within ...

Thanks guys, you have been most helpful.

I just hope this is the only thing causing my sputtering.
Time will tell.

Thanks to shoebox for the insight on purchasing parts from now on.

Thanks again !
