LT1 Headers
LT1 Headers
I would like to know what some of you recommend for my 1996 Camaro SS in the way of headers. I have heard longtubes give you a little better sound/performance, but I have also heard that shorties are just as good. And how much more difficult is it to have longtubes installed over shorites? A muffler shop told me you have to reprogram the computer so that the check engine light will not turn on, he said that the AIR and EGR will not function properly and will require alot more tuning than shorties. And he said I would have to get dual cats with the longtubes to make it "legal", and that I could stay with my stock cat with the shorties and use the stock y-pipe. But please tell me you guys opinion on the headers it is greatly appreciated. Thanks Tony
I see that you are new to the board. First of all, welcome. Now, to answer your question, I recommend that you do a search on this topic. This topic has been discussed many many times before, so doing a search will yield tons of useful info. Good luck.
I have TPiS headers. And they're a great header. They fit just like they're suppose to. And I haven't had a problem yet. Plug access is ok, like all. I got a pretty good gain too. About .2ths in the 1/8th mile.
Welcome to the board. As far as headers, you can search the topic and read for days on the subject. The general masses are going to say shorties for a mostly stock car and longtubes for a car with heads and cam and the like where flow is more important. If you plan on doing a heads/cam swap then dont waste your time and get longtubes, if not and you dont have big plans then go with shorties. You'll find that most people end up with longtubes replacing their shorties for the reasons I just mentioned. However its up to you. SLP shorties and the MACs are supposed to be really good shortie headers. I have Jet-Hot LTs and think they're awesome. Just a couple of suggestions for ya, theres other brands out there, just be smart and pick the ones that suit you.
Welcome aboard. I just got a set of Jet Hot Coated Mac 1 5/8 Headers with y-pipe and I also picked up a used Random Tech dual cat y-pipe. I am doing the single cat conversion since my car is a dual cat car and I have heard that the single cat style headers flow better than the dual cat style. Since your car is also a dual cat car alot of people have debated upon getting dual cat style headers or doing a single cat style header conversion. It depends on you and also on brand of headers alot of people either go SLP or Macs for shorties. I would recommend getting the headers coated. Good luck and if you have anymore questions feel free to e-mail but I am pretty sure the people on the board will be posting very helpful information and tips.

What kind of ground clearance do you have?. Is your car lower at all?. Have you seen another f-body with Hooker long tubes to compare the difference?. I am sick an tried of the leaking SLP's and want a set of long tubes.I have not read much on the TPIS headers though. Also what Y-pipe did you use ? Or did you make your own?.
TIA Mike
yupe i agree with Antz97ZNJ, its better to get a longtubes then get a shorties. As i just installed my shorties a few weeks ago and now i wanted a long tubes, its just a waste if u make the wrong choice. but its all up to you whether u want to do a head and cam (then u need a long tubes). For me i wanna make my car a N/A car. So every little flow will be a good thing for me that's why i need the long tubes..
