low coolant light

this is driving me nuts. i have 2 different radiator caps and i change them out when the light comes on about every 2 weeks. when i change the cap, no light for 2 weeks, but sure enough it comes on regularly with either cap. the car is not leaking coolant anywhere, so the only thing i can think of is that neither cap is sealing, the sensor is bad, or there is somehow air in the cooling system. the car runs at 170* all day long, so i'm not worried about it overheating.

what's the best course of action....bleed the system again? get a new radiator cap? change the sensor on the side of the radiator? i'm tired of looking at this damn light all the time.

This is a common problem. First I'd try removing the sensor and cleaning it with a toothbrush to de-**** it. It that does not work, replace it. If you just dont care about the sensor unplug it and the light will stay off.

I had mine disconnected for about 6 months. Then the other day I changed my coolant and thermostat. While I was at it I cleaned the level sensor with electronic parts cleaner. When I was done I bled the system. The light was out, but after Idrove the car it came back on, come to find out the level was low so I bled it again. No more light.

This problem is very common. Just unplug the thing like everyone else. As soon as I had that prob the guys here told me to unplug it. This was like 3 years ago. As long as you know you have coolant not to mention your temp gauge. You'll be fine. Sensor serves no purpose if you ask me.

It sounds like a sensor. If nothing is leaking, and your radiator/overflow are filled to their normal specs, and your "low coolant" light is still flashing, it's probably the sensor.

The sensor is very easy to replace. First, pull out your battery. Then drain the radiator to below the sensor level. The sensor looks like a little "box," about the size of a pager, on the back right side of the radiator (that's gonna be your left). You can't miss it. Just undo the clips, pull it out, and replace it with a new one. It's about a 10 minute job.

Time for a new "low coolant sensor" i think they are around $30 from the dealer.

I would bet that is your problem. Every 4th gen f-body i have ever had(4 now)needed the sensor replaced. I have gotten where i can jerk one out and slap the new one in without losing hardly any coolant.

Thanks
Shawn

i replaced the cap and still get the light. i'll probably try bleeding the system and cleaning the sensor before i replace it. exactly what part of the sensor needs to be cleaned?

The part that comes in contact with the coolant.

Heres a dumb question...if you pop off the rad cap, do you need to re-bleed the system all over again? My answer is no but I was just going to check and make sure I okay with taking it off when the motor is cold and I dont have to re-bleed the system. Thanks everyone!!
