A little disapointed in performance
My cars in sig, at my last trip to the track I ran a 14.3 at 96mph. That seems really bad to what most people here are running with LT1s I just passed 80,000 miles what tends to Slow the car down at that point, any suggestions would be appreciated

What were your 60' times? What was the weather like and your altitude? I know Cali is on the coast, but it can get pretty high at some points. I ran low/mid 14's in Lubbock, TX and when I came down to Houston...with the same mods...I ran consistent 13.8,9's. I didn't really think it mattered much, but it did.

60 ft. time was 2.15, it was about 55 degrees and the altittude is slightly above sea level only about 500 feet. I was expecting to trap about at 100.

1st of all, don't expect a 100 mph trap from a stock LT1. Some do it, but most don't. My first time to the track, I was hoping for a run under 14 seconds. I know my car was running great, and all I could get was the time in my sig. It was at 86 degrees at 80% humidity at sea level. It was my first time to the track too. I ran times slower than what you ran that day too. I couldn't get a good launch. The track had much better traction than I was used to on the street, and I kept bogging the engine.
Work on quick shifts. Your 60' time isn't all that bad for street tires. You did better than I did. My best was 2.2 seconds. People will argue with me, but by now there are a lot of used cars out there that people have bought with mods people aren't aware of. They think they are strock, go to the track and run a 13.6 at 103, for example, and think they ran it on a stock car. I would venture to guess that the average time for a LT1 stock is from 14.8 to 13.9. at 96-100 mph. So don't worry. Dan |
Did you just make one run? or is that the best time of several runs? It takes practice just like anything else to get the best time out of what you have. I've only been to the track once in my life. My first of 4 runs with all the mods I have listed in my sig was a 14.49 @ 100 and a 2.45 60' but after a few more runs, I managed a 13.85 with a 2.15 60'. I was running on my street tires, and had to go half throttle all the way through 1st to try to control wheel spin. Anyway, what I am saying is that you have room for improvement with some practice.

Thanks for the help. 14.3 was the best run of the day. I was thinking of changing the plugs, o2 sensor, and seafoam and see how well it does then.

OOps, that I was at fbody.com, I have no sig here :) but my mods are a SLP cam, SLP 2400 RPM torque converter, Mac headers, off road pipe, and cat back, BBK 52 mm tb, and 3.73s

I bet there is more in your car. All it takes is practice, once you get down shifting really well I bet you can get in the high 13s.

ever had any tuning done to the car??? tuning is everything on an LT1 once you start changing airflow charicteristics... (headers, CAI, thermostats. etc.)

Don't feel bad, when I went to the track on Halloween I had the same problem. I managed 14.3 @ 100 mph, with a very bad 2.3 60' time. But it wasn't just me, everyone on street tires was having the same problem. No matter where I launched from (I tried 2K, 2.5K, 3K, 4.5K) there was no traction to be found on street tires. My buddy with a 98 Cobra was only running a 14.5 on street tires, trapped like 102. I think it was because the track was cold (it was like 50 degrees out). Drag radial guys were having no problem.

Take this with a grain of salt, but learn how to race your car in the quarter mile. We all went through it the first time. My first time to the track with L.E. Heads, LT4 HotCam 1.6rr, no headers at the time on Drag Radials was a 14.1 the first run. Then a 13.8 then a 13.2, see where I'm going. You just need to learn how to drive your car. Good Luck, and get a few more runs in before winter. You'll be surprised what 60 degree weather with 50-60% humidity will do to your car.... :D

Yeah, your car will definitely be able to do better. Just practice it more and you'll get it.
