Question Leaking Oil at base of Oil dipstick tube...

I used a oil dye kit and found that the oil is leaking out from where the dipstick tube connects up to the block. The brand new GM dipstick tube I put in doesn't use any O-rings to seal up the connection. Is this normal? If not im going to purchase a Lokar Flex dipstick tube. It'll make reinstalling the dipstick easier since I got SLP headers.

Instead of spending the $$$ on a Lokar, buy some black RTV and dab some on the top lip of the dipstick tube, making sure it's clean on the block.

My new GM dipstick didn't have any o-rings either, but mine does not leak. I'm sure you could find a thick o-ring that would slip over the end of the tube and seat against the lip. I don't think that purchasing a new tube is the best cost-effective method though. Good luck.

When a new dipstick tube is installed you are supposed to coat the tube
for about a 1/2" below the collar with sealant. This is right from the service
manual.

Gosh i never knew that. The only reason im thinking about spending the $50 dollars on the Lokar flex tube is because its awhole lot easier to put in then the stock unit.

What kind of sealant is good? I believe I have a tube of black/red RTV sealant left over from my intake manifold gasket fix.

I have always used Permatex #1 on dip stick tubes. Just make sure it is clean before you apply it and make sure you let it completely dry after install. Overnight if you can.
