Leaking 'Low Oil' Sensor

I noticed a small pool (quarter size) of oil under the car every morning, so I climbed underneath to check it out. Turns out the low oil sensor was leaking where it screws into the pan. I checked it for tightness, and since it was pretty loose, I tightened it down. That appeared to fix it, but 5 days later it started leaking again.

Do I need a new sensor to fix this, or is there a gasket/washer that can be replaced?

Thanks,
Thomas.

I dont think you can buy just the gasket, I would just replace the sensor, or put some ATV on it before you put it back in.

You can buy just the gasket from your dealer. I don't know the part number but I bought one.

These oil sensors actualy leak through the wires seal. They have to be replaced. The new sensor I got from my local chevy dealer has a plastic casing where as the original was metal. Its been on there about a year and my oil spot has dissapeared.

it may depend on exactly where the sensor is leaking. a gasket or sealer will work if it's leaking around the threads, but i had one leaking on my last f-body that was leaking between the insulator and housing and i saw no other way to fix it but a new sensor.

Thanks guys. Mine looks to be leaking from where the threads are, but it doesn't look too healthy where the connector is either.

I think I'll just replace it and be done with it.

Thanks again,
Thomas.

quick question..... not to steal the thread.... but the pan doesnt have to be dropped to change the oil sensor??? when i had the pan down for cam install i guess things got bumped around, and now that its all back together my "low oil" light is on like 80% of the time!!

is this an easy fix? or does the pan have to come down again??

The pan does not have to be dropped, but you do have to drain the oil out. The low oil sensor is located right next to the drain plug. -- Clicky Picture

Your sensor could be bad, or the wires to it could be bad.

Just thought I would update the thread with part number information for reference purposes.

Oil Level Sensor:
GM p/n#: 24507190
$46.39 at local dealer
$26.44 from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com

Oil Level Sensor Seal:
GM p/n#: 10151633
$3.84 at local dealer
$1.28 from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com

Of course, GM Parts Direct charges $7.95 for shipping the sensor, so total cost would be $34.39.

Mine done the same thing but it was leaking around the threads.....I just put some thread sealent on it and it stopped....or you could just replace it and you might have to put thread sealent on the new one also......if it still works i would replace it......but if it still leaks after you do the thread sealent.....replace it because it might be leaking out through the wires like the other person was talking about.....

Well, if the sensor is $36, and 5 quarts of Mobil 1 oil is, what -- $20 or so? I figure it's best to just replace the sensor right off the bat.

If I just want to seal the sensor's threads,
I can drain the oil, remove sensor, replace gasket, RTV the sensor, reinstall, and fill with oil.
Total cost is $23 or so. ($3 for the seal + 5 quarts Mobil 1)

If that fixes it, great!
If it doesn't fix it,
now I gotta buy a sensor and another 5 quarts of Mobil 1.
The total cost is now up to $77.00 ($40 for 10 quarts of Mobil 1 + $34 for the sensor + $3 for the 1st seal)

If I replace the sensor right off the bat, total cost is $54 ($34 for sensor + $20 for 5 quarts mobil 1)

I dunno, just my opinion ....

Do you need the gasket

Stupid question I know but, my 1997 Z has a leaking low oil sensor also, just from looking at it I dont see a gasket, just the sensor. The part number listed for the gasket 10151633 is a package of 5 for $6.40 plus $5.25 estimated shipping from GMPartsDirect. So do I need a gasket? Why the heck would they come packaged in qtys of 5 and not with each unit? Sorry to be so "penny-pinching" but it is that time of the year, lol.

adding more info:If your car is a dual cat car you have to drop the cat and pipe. Because it blocks the sensor from coming out . Its about 7" long.

One of us confused

Hey, 1msfyter, one of us is confused here, no way I gotta do that, this sensor is right above the oil drain plug. I think it is the low oil sensor and you are referring to the oil pressure sensor, fyi

I managed to get the sensor out without dropping the pipe. It was a very tight fit though. The new sensor, which I got from my local chevy dealer, came with a new gasket right in the box.
