Largest Rear Tire Width without any Modification?

I’m probably going to have some 17 inch ZR1 or SS wheels on my Camaro soon and will need to choose some tires for them. I work at Discount tire and my boss is hooking me up greatly with employee discounts. So obviously with the 3.4L this isn’t about traction at all, just looks. I don’t care about added weight either; all looks. I already plan on having some 275 Nitto NT 555’s on the front. On the rear I’d like the largest tire possible without rolling the lip or any other modification. So my question is, will 315 Nitto 555R drag radials fit on my rear with out any problem? What’s the largest tire width our cars can handle? Or should I just get some 285 NT 555s for the rear?

Hey man, it's after midnight... not many people are still around :) Please give it at least 24 hours before bringing it back up to the top (see sticky here ;) ). Thanks!

275/40/17 is the largest. 315/35/17 will need massaging.

Some people claim to be able to bolt the 17x11 50mm offset ZR1's and 315 tires on with no problems. Others, like me had to hammer the inner wheel wells and cut the edge off the jounce bumper brackets. Even if you have to hammer and cut, its really not all that traumatic...... I suspect the Nitto 315 DR's, being a little narrower in overall section width than the BFG 315 DR's will fit with less interference on the inner fenders.

I had 17x9.5" +56mm wheels with 275/40/17 Kumho Victoracers (autox race tire) rub on both sides in the rear in hard turns. Weird huh? And that was with a double rod ended phb.

Of course being 9.5" that moves the tire in 1/4" more than an SS wheel.

335s fit if you want to hammer and trim.

I'm running AFS 17X11 rears with 315's on them. No rubbing problems & substantially better traction than the 275's I had on there before. I image NITTO's would be even better yet.
