Just got 97 z28, bone stock - what mods to do first?

Hi,

New to forum, new to LT1 engine, and not particularly mechanical.

I want to do some mods, but need bolt on type, or items that I can have done relatively inexpensively. I am very conserned w/ drivability and dependability.

Having NO MODS on my 1997 z28 w/ 56K miles...what would you suggest to be a MOD ORDER to do things. Please include estimate of cost/HP increase/ease of install.

I know this may be asking alot - but I am flying blind here. Very happy to find this site. I am a previous 944 turbo owner, 911 targa, and C4 vet. All had good support sites. This one seems to measure up very well.

Thanks in advance for help. Really appreciate it.

Typically most people start out with a cold air induction kit and catback exhaust. Together they'll probably give you about 20 rwhp. Cost can vary a lot, I picked up my K&N cold air kit for $100 used and my SLP exhaust for $200 used. If you buy new, expect the cold air kit to cost $170-$200 and $250+ for the catback.

As far as which brand to go with, you'll get a lot of opinions so I suggest just doing a search in this forum.

hey San Antonio huh, i see alot of f-bodies out there, infact I'll be going back there next week. But anyway, if you have t-tops, I'd suggest SFCs to be one of your 1st mods. then also CAI is also nice to throw in there. which are the 2 mods i have on mine so far. Next for me I plan on LCA w/ relocation brackets, then a strut tower brace, then a catback, then some headers w/ lt4 knock module.

i just got a 94 z last month and i did pro 5.0 shifter(girlfriends gift) slp cai (the best in my opinion used for 135 chrome) and i got the rear camaro lettering insert and white hurst **** cuz my car is white and i painted the grilles of the spakers red cuz my int is red/black and now im saving for sfcs boxed bmr and hookercatback.
if u are short on money get a used cai(cold air intake) or homemade and a cut out.

btw what difference did u notice when u put the sfcs?huge?

its all up to you, different people have different prefrences. it depends on if you want more power, stiffer suspension or you want to do appearance mods. do some research on some online aftermarket parts stores.

I just got the shifter that Jarrod Holland sells on ebay. GREAT shifter especially for the price! $20! much shorter and crisper shifts. find it on ebay under the seller Jrod07.

and you say you had a C4?? if it was a 92+ it had an LT1 also...

hey cridom, those SFCs made a tremendous difference for me. there's this piece of street around the block near where i live thats got like 50 million bumps on it and I used to go bouncing and rattling my way thru it, since the SFCs the only thing thats rattling is my license plate bracket i keep in the "trunk". =) the overrall ride quality is alot better as well.

My numbers are in my sig. Those were with just a cutout.

A 97 Z that day put down 280hp and 301tq with Corsa Catback and (Moroso?) CAI..

Best way to start..

I'm doing my mods in phases/steps...my first phase is a Pro 5.0 Shifter, gears, cat-back and intake. It's whatever you prefer/can afford.

I just went thru this in the past year. With the way that these cars run so hot, i'd have to recomend a 160 sat. & a PCM reprogram to get the fans on earlier. Not to mention tighting up the shifts & better spark advance curve. With the hot weather on it's way you will soon know what I'm getting at !
