Lightbulb Just Getting Started Questions

Hey all. Just bought my first 95 Z28 and have a few starter questions
I want to get rid of the Cat (mainly for better sound), does anyone carry a bolt on test pipe (no welding)?
What are the basic engine mods I can start of with and their expected gains?
What are some sources to buy from above?

TIA!

Jeff

Get you a good cold air intake (CAI). You can probably get about what they tell you, maybe 15-20 hp. Try thunderracing.com, they have the easiest site to navigate. You can get a y pipe that will delete your cats, look on that site too. I'm not sure if they have one for stock exhaust manifolds though.

Hi...I'd go with Red and get a Cold Air kit and I'd also get some headers. Depends on how much money you have, maybe throw in a torque converter. Those are the best bag for the buck for a stock Z.

just go to autozone for some piping to weld in place of the cats, if you dont want to mess w/ that go for a $30 cutout

Jeff is this your first performance vehicle? You need air and exhaust, so a Good Cold air, or follow some tech guides and make your own. get some headers on it. Is this an auto or six speed? If you have any questions, just hit me up on AIM and I'll help you out. Good luck

Jeff Start with the budget mods. Get the CAI New off ebay for cheap. Like a Moroso CAI. Then look for some Pulleys...also good for a nice 10hp. Put I think exhaust is a standard thing to start with first. Flowbastards are cheap and SLP loud mouths are popular. If your a budget guy you can't go wrong with a Flow Bastard or DynoMax 3in pipe custom from the cat on back. Stay clear the "American Thunder" series. After that you might want to consider getting a MSD-6 IGN Box and some thicker spark Plugs...I'd put the Headers off. Most all of them are expensive and are dependent upon how radical you want your car to be.

For sources

Thunderracing.com (Pullies, Exhaust ETC)
Ebay(for cheap new parts like Intakes,MSD stuff Exhaust kits ETC)
Summit Racing-(for technical stuff like Spark plugs, gaskets ETC)

Thumbs up You are way Kewl, Thanx!!!

Thanks everone! My 95 Z28 is automatic.
Some follow-up questions:
Where might I get a cut out (test pipe) to bolt right in place of the stock conveter?
Does the Hypertech III programer do anything to help performance? Guess this car does not take chips (eproms)??
How about a shift kit to firm up shift points, please advise which one you suggest?
Then maybe follow up later on a converter... BTW what is the stock stall?
What converter do ya like for street fun?
Agree exhaust and CAI, will beone of my 1st from a $$$ and ease stand point-I like to do the work myself.
What about tweaking the TPS and IAC for more performance like I do on my GN?

Again Thanx a lot!!!

I would recommend a mail order tune either from PCMForLess or MadWolf (supporting advertiser on this board) before I'd go with Hypertech.

K&N FIPK (CAI), Long tube headers (not right at 1st but eventually), 3" catback, UD pulleys, tuning.

Before you start doing mods left and right, hang around the board a few months to get a feel for what people are doing. Almost all mods are based on personal preference and you'll need to do a little research before you jump in with both feet.

Very true, but you can't go wrong with a CAI and some longtubes.

What year model is your car?

You can't just buy a bolt-in pipe to replace your cat because your cat is welded to your y-pipe.
