Installing oil pressure sensor on 93. Help!

After checking Shoebox's site, I see the oil pressure sensor goes right above the oil filter. The problem I am having is that the block is too close to the body of the car. Even if I get the sensor on, there is no way to get the plug and heat shield on too.

I have just installed my rebuilt motor and am using Prothane mounts. All I can think is that the engine is somehow sitting too far to the left or too far back. Is it possible I put the right side mount on wrong? There were four bolt holes to the block, so there are two possible mount orientations. I have used the three holes furthest back.

I remember when the engine was together 8 months ago that it was difficult to get that sensor off. But this is ridiculous. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also I see other bolt holes, that after probing, discovered do not go into the block. I believe they are for a long skinny bracket on the left side, and a short skinny bracket on the right. I cannot find the other bolt hole on the right for the bracket. Does it use the engine mount? Any pics would help of any scenario, and thanks Shoebox for your detailed site.

I'm about to use the Get a bigger hammer method if my patience cannot prevail.

Thanks, Nate

Re: Installing oil pressure sensor on 93. Help!

i broke mine when i installed my longtubes, and let me tell u getting the new one in was a full day process, it did go in tho, i bought a special socket for it for like 10 buks, but it didnt work cuz i couldnt get it off the sensor after it was screwed in because it was hitting the body. idk about the whole motor mount thing but i can tell u that on a car with regular motor mounts it is still a pita. i just screwed it in hand tight and tightened it up with a small channel locks
good luck

If it just won't fit, try some combination of fittings and an elbow to change the direction of mounting.

Like shoebox said if you get a one inch peice of pipe with pipe threaded ends and a 90 or 60 deg elbo you can turn that thing to where its more manageable. I had a 93 before this car and broke mine as well when installing longtubes, I put it back in the stock configuration and it was a bugger, I eventually lowered the rear of the tranny (unbolted crossmember , supported with a jack) and it was a "little" easier.
Had I to do it over again I would have elboed it to face another direction.

Thanks all for the replies. I'll get a fitting and move the sensor. Glad to know I'm not the only one with problems there.

Re: Installing oil pressure sensor on 93. Help!

I broke mine too when I was installing my longtubes, and I'm in the process of getting a new one but there are many different part numbers. I considered relocating the sensor to the '95-up location but I heard the thread sizes are different. Can anyone confirm that I cannot use a '93 sensor in the '95-up location behind the intake? I'm thinking of keeping the sensor in the stock '93 location. Where can I get those little pipe fittings to change the orientation of the sensor? What thread size do I need?

I'll confirm that, the 93 and early 94 used a much larger diameter pipe. I'm wanting to say it is 7/16ths or 1/4 on the early and like 5/15ths on the late.

If both blocks are the same (93 and late 94-97), why can't you just buy a sending unit for a later model and put it behind the intake? Are the actual sensors and connectors different? if so i could see the complication.

The connector is the same , but the pipe diameter that screws into the block is a different diameter, the 93 and early 94 are the larger diameter and longer. the late 94 on up is smaller diameter and shorter and mounted behind the intake on the block. If you bought the fitting and sensor, you could remove the plug behind the intake and plug it in up there you would also obviously have to plug the block where the old sensor went (unless you like your oil all on the ground..lol)

This is what i was saying. It's obvious that you would need to plug the hole. So why isn't anybody just moving it to behind the intake instead of going through the hassel of putting a 90* threaded pipe for the one on the side of the block?

Mostly because the plug removal while in the car is a Bugger.

Re: Installing oil pressure sensor on 93. Help!

I feel like an idiot, but I did get my sensor on just fine with no elbows. I was trying to put the sensor in the wrong hole! My engine builder plugged the hole right above the oil cooler. I was trying to get the sensor in the hole above that! It doesn't work. When I finally cranked it over, I had oil spurting out the hole for the 95 and up place, cuz that is where engine builder thought the oil sensor went! So I had to plug hole in back w/ engine in - a PITA but possible. And I believe it was a 1/4 inch. Whereas I think the sensor I have is a 3/8.

Knowing all this now, I WOULD like to install a secong oil pressure sensor for peace of mind and sheer curiousity.

THats what I am about to do. I am going to move my sensor to the late 94 and up spot behind the intake and put my Auto meter gauge in the original location, while my engine is still on the stand
