Info/help/tips on diy head porting
I have an extra set of lt1 heads I was looking to port out, but don't know where/how much to take out material in the intake/exhaust runners. Also for the chambers should I just clean out flash and polish them, or is there material I can take out to give the head a better swirl and combustion efficiency?
Thanks in advance Brad |
There are many books/magazine articles on porting. There have been some GREAT articles on it in recent months in Hot Rod, Super Chevy, Car Craft, etc.
If you're a first-timer (like me), don't plan on hogging them out just yet (without EXPERIENCED help). Reducing the valve guide diameter inside the bowl and removing the casting flash/roughness can easily give you ~20 hp. I have read in many articles and books that the polishing of the ports is mainly for cosmetics and doesn't really do anything for performance, but won't hurt anything if you do it. |
Remember where the air flows.. ALONG THE ROOF.. increasing your efficiency where they need to flow is where you're going to make the HP's

LoL, I didn't plan on polishing the ports just the chambers to prevent carbon buildup. Maybe once they come out with clear intakes I'll give the runners a shot:D . Thanks for the help, keep it coming

why not port match it at least? and clean up the ports.. might as well.. then again while you're there, new cam, springs, rockers, hell while your at that, just pull the motor and drop a stroker in... should i continue? ;)

Since they are a spare set, just take your time work diligently and port the hell outta those things :)

Go to the Standard Abrasives website. They have excellent step by step instructions you can download.
