Ignition Control Module?

Cruising along doing about 75 last night and the car just died. Big Backfire. No warning. It won't start back.

Sprayed fuel into the intake and it did not start.

Checked the #1 plug wire with a timing light. No spark.

Unplugged the coil wire. Current was arcing to the water pump off the coil.

Sound like the ICM or should I just tear into the opti?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Ignition Control Module?

ICM is cheap, I'd replace that and do a coil check before you go ripping into the opti just to make sure.

I just had some stumbling problems with mine, I know it isn't the most cost efective way to fix my problem but I replaced the plugs first. STill a problem. THen replaced all the wires. Still a problem. Now I ordered a new opti, ICM, and coil. Atleast after I reaplce all this I can eliminate the ignition, :p

oops, forgot to mention that since I put the Accel coil on a couple years back, I still had my stocker, which worked fine when it came off. I switched it back to the old one with the same results...

sounds like your rotor grenaded, hope not though

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I posted about it a few days ago in a post called "electical problems???" It turned out to be the msd 6al box. I put a different one on and it hasn't died on me yet...fingers crossed. Your signature doesn't say you have an aftermarket ignition...but I thought I would throw that out there.

Good luck.

That's what I've been saying all day. I figure that thing just finally gave up the ghost. It DOES have 145,000 on the original opti. Guess I'm due.

doesn't really matter, since I have an extra sitting there anyway.

No aftermarket ignition...

If spark is coming out of the coil wire, I would say the coil and ICM are working. So, sounds like you have spark going into the opti, but not coming out.

thats what I was thinking
means the optical sensor part of the opti should be ok
thats why I said the rotor probably grenaded

Indeed. That would be a good guess, based on the tests made. :)
