Identify these pieces?

These threads are always amusing (if it's not your car!)

Tearing the engine down and found these in the oil pan. Having trouble identifying what they are. Haven't gotten the rods out yet to investigate further.

Good answer.

It's pretty thin metal. It's not what I thought a bearing would look like, but I can't think what else it would be. Major destruction like this is new to me.

i agree, it looks to be a windage tray or spyder. im curious to know what they are also. i cant think of how a spyder could get chewed up like that.

if he's got the pan off he'd know if it was the windage tray though.

Re: Identify these pieces?

Whatever it is, there's a shredded piece of it stuck between the number 3 rod & the crank:

And is this what the windage tray looks like. Is it just a single piece of formed metal? No bottom piece to it or anything?

About how big are the pieces in the first pic. I cant really get a good perspective. Maybe you could put a ruler next to them or something.

Re: Identify these pieces?

yep from looking at that pic your rods and your crank are shot. plan on replacing the crank becuse if a motor chews up the berings liuke that the crank will be to far out of spec to be fixable

Re: Identify these pieces?

I really dont think that could be a bearing. If it was a bearing, that motor would absolutlely have thrown a rod, or something horrific. I think it may be a Lifter Spyder.

The piece on the far right of the first pic, does look like a piston ring, but I think that may actually be a piece from the lifter as well that got bent to a suprisingly circular shape.

Did you notice the little pieces stuck on the screen of the oil pic up? When you rebuild that motor, dont let anything go unchecked. You definatly need to flush the oil passages all out before reassembly. Although any reputable shop will clean the parts after they repair/rebuild for you.
