I need some input on this engine

Does anyone have any thoughts on this engine? Is it too high priced or does it look like a good deal?
Any input would be appreciated.

Ehh, let a "head guy" do the heads. Youll make more power cheaper.

Buy a forged short block from them, and get AFR's or something ported by LE. Get Bret to grind you a custom cam. Youll make as much power with better driveability. Custom cam is the only way to go ... I say that bottom end, with a LE3 would be nasty as hell. And still fairly streetable since you will have the extra cubes.

just buy the $5500 slp 383 ls1 engine...you';ll need new accessories and a new ECM/wire harness.....but you'll be well over that hp range, and much higher in the potential HP range.

Re: I need some input on this engine

It is pretty pricey... It doesn't have a forged crank and Im no expert but I think that cam would be too aggressive for the street.

What I was going to eventually do is find a salvage yard around and get a complete LT1 for $300-$500 instead of buying that engine I would have $5800-$6000 to play with and you get to keep my car rolling too I mean forged crank, forged rods, forged pistons, splayed caps, 383 bored block, any cam I want, full rolling valve train, performance heads, big injectors, upgrade fuel and ignition system, maybe enough left over for headers and true duels

Even if it runs over depending on what I get on the LT1 junk yard motor I might be able to offset the build cost 100 or 200 bucks

Also, you should get a decent oil pan for that price. Something with better oil control than a stocker anyway.

Re: I need some input on this engine

When looking at the power numbers you folks seem to not grasp just how much the chassis dyno numbers are different from crank. That engine WILL be UNDER 370rwhp through an M6 the history of Golen longblocks prove that. His head work sucks simple as that. The shortblocks are fine though.

It may help if you guys would realize that the 400rwhp stock shortblock cars shops like AI and LE are helping customers turn out would be easily at the same HP level or higher if tested the same, zero intake or exhaust restriction, no accessories not even a waterpump.

I am not saying he is bad or that he is lying or anything I am saying those of you who find those numbers impressive just do not understand how they are achieved and how to compare them to more commonly discussed rwhp numbers.

Re: I need some input on this engine

looks like they took down the long block but here's a 400 short block
http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=12400
and here's the low compression version
http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=12413

they used to have long blocks up...it was only about 1000 more for a 383 over a stock engine. it was a crazy deal but i could never come up with the 6k or i'd have a 383 ls1 instead of an lt1

You need to do some research before telling someone to put an ls1 into their lt1 car. You can't just by an ls1 and put it in. You have to change out the wiring harness, tranny, kmember etc. So that $5500 price tag will actually be closer to 8-9k when complete.
