how to set timing on CARBED LT1

hello

I am doing a carbed LT1 conversion on my 1985 RX7 :D
and I will use the stock LT1 alternator ( no AC no PS ) + HEI distributor

my questions are

1st choice: if I use stock crank hub and balancer
how can I set the timing ?
I am asking because the LT1s don't have timing marks

2nd choice: sbc style damper and pointer
can I use SBC damper on stock LT1 crank ?
which type should I use "Internal" or "Internal/External" damper ?

any input appreciated

thanks

Very crude way...find TDC while assembling engine or other means and mark balancer and point to 0. Determine circumference of balancer, divide by 360 and that is one degree. Start measuring and marking. I'm sure someone will have a more precise and proven method.

Get a LT1 balancer with timing marks on it. Powerbond, ATI, Fluidampir all have them.

There is a Opti Plug that GM sells with a pointer on it, or you can modify the cover and a billet timing pointer and set it up that way.

I like your idea ( Cheap a$$ ;) )

SStrokerAce

I will use billet pointer with stock marked damper

thanks :)

Thanks...it is definitely cheap but I bet it would work. Don't know why it wouldn't. I will admit however that SStrokerAce's idea would be much cleaner looking, and probably more accurate. I kinda figured there was aftermarket parts available to do it but I am still kinda new to these cars and still learning.

Sent you a pic of what I was talking about.

I timed heathers car by ear when we did her carbed LT-1 swap into her third gen. Of course, i've been doing this for years, so I really wouldn't suggest it...lol

I can't ever suggest that.... I've seen motors that were off 1 deg on timing be down 20hp easy, and what looks or sounds right is off 45hp on the dyno.
