How much is my engine worth?

after my wreck, i've had alot of people ask me if i was gonna be selling my engine and gave me their numbers saying they were interested...

soon as i come up with a price...

its got 62 k miles, runs strong, mint, no problems, very good condition...

what do you think i could get for it?

i really need to know... but i have no way of knowing what on the car is worth what...

rage366 07-19-2003 10:50 PM

~$900.

In good condition, no leaks, clean etc.
With the computer, 1000 to 1200. Depending on extras the purchaser wants you to throw in.

frmula1 07-20-2003 12:02 AM

is that for just the block and manifolds? or like everything...

cause one guy wanted EVERYTHING.... alternator... starter... battery... computer... air intake... the whole shabazz...

rage366 07-20-2003 12:28 AM

he wants the battery too?? what a tight-azz!! well, if ya dont need any of it, give him a "complete package" deal...

tell him $1200 for everything. it's much simpler to sell to one buyer than to split the stuff up and waste your time on it...

frmula1 07-20-2003 12:37 AM

well... not that he's anal.. :)

but the car was wrecked... and the engine and everything around it is mint....

so i think he wants to simply do a "pull out, drop in" sorta thing... like he doesn't want to go buy a alternator, battery, etc.... he just wants everything to drop in his car and get it running...

1200 for EVERYTHING sounds kinda cheap...

im looking to make as much as possible without being too greedy...

any elaboration ?

rage366 07-20-2003 12:42 AM

go to a junk yard and do a price check...is the guy gonna pull the motor out himself?

thebigdog 07-20-2003 12:49 AM

Go to Ebay, I buy alot of LT1's for Jeep conversions, we get them locally, but you will find that the market is alot better for the entire package, including the harness and PCM.

For now-a-days standards your motor has what is concidered to be somewhat low miles, it's getting harder and harder to get the ol LT1's with anything less than 100K, which is why most conversions we do now use the LS1's.

$1200 is a fair price less the transmission. You shouldnt have any problems getting that, but remember......dont get greddy!

I'd have to go with the 1200 or so for the whole package.. they are too common and are cheap as heck in south texas.. He's right though on the LS1's.. they are poppin up all over the place and are the rave now so they command a higher price.. I can tell you you can make some dough parting out a whole car if you have the patience and time to do it..

I can tell you you can make some dough parting out a whole car if you have the patience and time to do it..

and thats exactly what i don't have...

time...

i have plenty of people waiting for the engine... and the tranny converter should be easy to get rid of... (they're new,  )

so if i can get $2900/3000 for the engine, tranny, converter, computer&harness, cooler and accessories (which are still in the box)... i will settle for that.. and it shouldn't be too hard

but i need to get another $1700-2000

for the rest of the car...

the interior is mint... but i anticipate that is where i might run into problems...

if i can find someone to take whole car minus engine, tranny and such... for like $1600-1700 i would count my lucky stars and move on...

any takers?

:)

I think you're kinda out of the ballpark thinking you're gonna get $3K...maybe if you add all the extra's, and find someone that doesn't know what things are worth.....but here's a good comparable sale.....for quite a bit less. Just something to think about...

frmula1 07-20-2003 03:45 AM

well. the guys above... just said what the engine and computer itself is worth...

the tranny is that add however has the stock converter... AND has 89k on them...

my converter you can look up on summit and the tranny is built

and both are new...

no one will give you a good offer for a camaro tranny because they have no idea how rough you've been with it...it's MUCH more likely to break down on ppl, so they wont offer much at all...with that many miles, i've seen em go for $400...or LESS...one guy on here wanted to sell his for $350...

I am agreeing on that. You won't get a ton of cash for the tranny. (You can get a 4l80e on E-Bay for slightly more than a 700r4. I deal a LOT on E-Bay) $1200 for the engine WITH all accessories is about right, but if you throw in the trans and converter it could go for $1800. (People LIKE a complete package. Also, if you get some guy that's impressed with the miles it could go for a LOT more.) The thing you have to think about though is that the other parts will net some $$. People buy front suspensions (LT1 type) on E-Bay for $200, rear-ends (stock) for $350, seats for $250, consoles for $75 to $100, factory CD players for $150, ground effects $350, power-window switches for $30 each, mirrors for $50 a pair, starters for $70, etc., etc. (Got T-tops? another $250. All these are prices I have personally seen in my search for parts to do my engine swap.) PLUS when it's stripped, you MIGHT get a couple hundred for the shell! (With title, and I don't even want to know why people buy VIN plates and titles.) Anyway, since it sounds like you have decided to part it out, check the going prices on E-Bay before selling anything. It sounds like you would like to see $4500 to $5000 for the whole thing. I can see where you might get somewhere close. (Also, there are performance parts to consider) Do yourself a favor and look at E-Bay, get registered if you are not already, and start listing parts.
