How much HP does a stock 97 LT1 have compared to a 97 cobra?
 

Hey guys I was wondering how much Hp a stock 97 LT1 6 speed makes.
I have seen diffrent #'s.
My friend has a 97 cobra who says his puts out much more hp compared the a 97 Z28.

The LT1 is rated at 285hp. I believe the Cobra is rated at 305?

In a race, I'd give the slight advantage to the Cobra. I believe they trap a mph or 2 faster than LT1s.

Not to be a jerk, but youd be better off posting this in the lounge as it is not really LT1 tech.

dude i raced a 98 Cobra the first month i bought my 97 Z, needless to say, as im sure you already know, ford hp is overrated, gm is underrated....i smoked him by like 2 cars at 90 mph....he kept accusing me of this and that cuz my car was stock and had more miles than him...heres my mathimatical equation for the loser 5.7>4.6

I'm with him. I've smoked 96, 97's. Newer cobras are out of our league. But the older ones can't hang. Not even close... SteveO, you losing to those snakes? You better get your car checked out man :p

yeah, the 305 peak number from the anemic DOHC motor means little since the beefier powerband of the LT1 has a much larger area under the curve in powerband. A stock LT1 should murder any Cobra made from 93-01. If it doesn't, there is something wrong with it or the Cobra has quite a few modifications ;)

I think the cobra is pretty close to the LT1 in power but it lacks torque down low. I've heard the 4.6 cobra guys add 4.10 or 4.30 gears and they really wake them up.

I've only raced one DOHC cobra in my life... 97 or 98ish car... and beat it, but we were both modded. I'm not really worried about them until they throw a supercharger on!;)

The funny thing is if you go post this exact same question on a Mustang board, youll have everyone there posting about how they never lost to a stock LT1 in their stock Cobra. ;)

When i was BONE stock a4 95 TA, I raced a mid 90s cobra. I knew nothing about them. I asked what he had, his buddy told me, 4.6L DOHC, and I replied, single cam, 5.7L. We raced twice, first time off a 25mph roll, he had the jump, and pulled at first, then we were even, I was about to reel him in at about 70mph but we both slowed down.

We raced again off the line. There was a car parked about 100 yards ahead of us, in my lane. I was able to pass him and switch into his lane. I continued to pull away from him. At around 60mph, i noticed a bus crossing the road, not realizing how fast we were coming, i hit the brakes, the cobra kept going, passed me, and soo nearly got SMOKED but this bus who thought it had enough time to cross the road. Mustang went all the way to the left to avoid it.

No more street racing for me... well... not for a while anyway

Moral of the story, you'll beat the mustang if you can shift.

yea ive murdered many cobras w/ a 94 firebird off the line, freeway no competition really... i've lost to two mustangs an 04 cobra, and an 03 GT that had some mods of some sort cause he pulled pretty good unlike many others that i race, and ive declined on a race w/ a mid 90's GT or Cobra i donno i could hear it had a cam and a charger and he was reving a lot so i didnt give him the gratification of beating a stock lt1

When I just had CAI and catback I could take 97 cobras with my auto. I usually got them out of the hole and once we got moving we stayed pretty even. Never had a chance to race bone stock.

Im not sure where your getting your info from but like stated above 96-98 Cobra usually traps in the 103-104 mph range and is a mid to higher 13 second car stock...Both cars driven properly the Cobra gets the edge.
