How are the hooker shorties?

I cannot decide which headers to get.. I have spent way to much money modding this car that I have only driven once. Bought it and immediately stored it for the michigan winter. I am debating between these three. The hookers I can get the cheapest right now.
1.hooker shorties coated
2.mac shorties coated
3.rk sport coated

i had the rk's on my last 94z and loved them but they are the priciest of the bunch. I also know mac has problems with long back orders. Just throw some opinions.

thanks,
Brandon

Well, to me it would be between the RKsports and the MAC's

The MAC's may be on back order, but you should get them before you need to get the car out of storage.

I vote for the MAC's, but the RKsports would be great too. I'm not sure that the coating on the RKsoports would hold up as long as the Jet-Hot coated MAC's. I have no experience to base this on though.

MACs:
Theoretically better low end, slightly worse top end compared to RKsports
Better Plug access
Good Price

RKsports:
Theoretically worse low end, but better high end
Worse Plug access
More expensive
More future proof if you intend to make some insane HP.

I place no trust in the Hooker Shorties. Just my $.02

As for the MAC/RK SPORT (ASM knock-off), there's another thread a few pages back with some good discussion on this.

I have the Hookers and am satisfied. All they need is some minor tweaking. My reasons for purchase were price coated. Performance wise the shorties all fall together pretty close.

I would go with the arizona speed and marine mid lengths. They have 1 3/4 primaries instead of 1 5/8. Will give you much less restriction.

Hooker shorties are a decent quality product for the price. Yeah, you will want to open up the outlet on the collectors but that's not such a big deal if you have a dremel. But if emissions didn't require shorties I'd probably get AS&Ms.

ASM's are 49 state legal. Just not in the Peoples Republic of California.

I have the hooker shorties. I like them and think they're a decent product. I got them because of the price and ground clearance. Plus the ceramic coating holds up pretty well. Plug access is not that bad either and anything beats the stock manifolds. I'd go with the hookers or macs. If you choose the macs, get them ceramic coated. That HTS coating they come with is crap. Just my $.02.

I was decideing on the same thing when i decided to go with the AS&M's. Both are good headers with the Macs having the better plug access. But the as&m or rk sports will provide a little more power and will be better off in the long run if you want to get high in the hp. The smaller primaries will start to hurt you later on with the Macs.

So if i were you i would go with the rk sports over the macs.

I got the Hooker shorties and like them, but I do regret that I did not get LT's. I did have to deal with emissions at the time, and also did not want to fork out 1200 for the FLP's.

My only gripe about the Hooker shorties is that the flange for the y-pipe as a wierd shape to it where it hooks up to the cat, and also EGR fittings are different. I had to get the '94 fittings to adapt them to my '95. But for the price of coated headers you can't beat it.

Cool

Another vote for Mac Headers! I have these headers, Single cat sytle, and they are awesome. Plug acess and also power gain is awesome. I purchased mine thru Jet-Hot so I got the coating on them inside and out. If I were you I would recommend getting Mac headers and also get them thru Jet-Hot to get them coated so you don't have to worry about them rusting out on you. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.

I vote for the AS&M's

I love mine, and they still are looking very nice after about a year and a half. They make great power and sound really good

I have had no problem with my hooker shorties they were very easy to install. What ever you decide to get get them ceramic coated. Jason

Right out of the box I have to agree with you. The collector openings are barely bigger than the stock manifolds, but if you open them up about a 1/4 inch all the way around you will see gains as good as the MACs. I am still running them on my 383 and make 400+ rwhp NA. Long tubes are going on shortly though

Hooker shorties =

I had them and they sucked. Power gains were minimal for the money I spent on them. I regret ever buying the coated ones. Although I did get decent sell back on them.

SLP shorties are better, bigger primaries, more power.

Long tubes are they way to go if emissions aren't a problem.
