How to find TDC with crank pulley on ...

I've reinstalled my heads and am trying to set the valves. I know you can find TDC but moving the arrow to 12 o'clock and having both the lifters on the first cylinder to be down and go from there. However, my crank pulley is still on and I can't see the arrow on the hub. I'm having trouble adjusting lifters and believe it's because I can't find TDC. Any suggestions ... Thanks.

The pulley has the arrow on it. The hub will have a raised mark at the same location.

Ok. Now I'm confused or must have missed it. Honestly, I'm really not this dumb ... The pulley that the belt rides on has the arrow on it? Is it visible from the front and where should I look? Guess I was in the garage too long yesterday and was losing my mind ...

should be alittle triangle that is visible on the front of the pully if it is like the camaro. You can also tell by looking into the spark plug hole if you have too.

Assuming its like any other SBC. Its on the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pully. Easiest way to see it is to jack up the car and get under it.

i'm wrong about other SBCs having the triangle on the crank pully

Turn it over by hand and watch #1 intake go down and come almost all the way back up. Look at the arrow and it should be almost 12 o'clock, Turn it to 12 o'clock and # 1 should be at TDC. Or pull the plug use a straw to tell when the piston reaches the top.

Just remember the damper hub is not keyed to the crankshaft, so there's no assurance the arrow has any relationship to TDC, unless you installed it exactly that way, or added a key.

So would it just be best to use the method (found it somewhere on here) where you do a cylinder at a time watching the lifters and not worry about TDC?

when you are check the lifters you are finding TDC, you can use either method to find tdc, or you can pump air in with an adapter to set the valves

The straw method will verify its location.
