How do you check 4 a bad lifter

I was wondering if anybody knew how to check for bad lifters without taking the manifold off. Also if I have a bad lifter will it throw a code? Help

Pretty sure it won't throw a code. Not positive on that though - is your car clicking real bad, and does it match your revs if that sound is there? Maybe if you gave more info someone with more knowledge than me can help you out more.

Well I do have a clicking noise that increases with revs. I have a miss in the idle; hopes this is the info you were taking about.

You can check the lifters by simply removing the valve cover. Usually, not always, but usually the noisy one is collapsed and when you push on it, it is mushy and moves. You should check to be sure any nuts haven't backed off. You could also check the lash again. Lash can be done running or off but remember when it's running, it's messy. If you have to change one lifter, don't waste your time, change them all. Be sure to inspect the lifter roller very carefully for lost bearing rollers.

Oh yeah, what oil are you using? I see a lot of people that have used the wrong weight oil and tapping is the result. If you put in a high quality 5w-30, it may quiet down. Try the oil first. Maybe all you need.

by pushing on the lifter do you mean pull the rocker arm and push down on the pushrod?

i think i may have the same problem but on my LS1...

sucks that i have to pull the heads to change lifters!!!

Re: How do you check 4 a bad lifter

You would be pushing down on the pushrod, away from the rocker arm, I'd imagine.

Another way to check is to take off the valve covers and run the engine. yeah, its a little messy, but you can rig up some cardboard to keep the oil from getting all over your headers or whatever. Watch all of your rockers to make sure that they are moving properly. If one of the rockers is not moving like it should (very little movement) that lifter is suspect.
Instead of taking of both valve covers, put a screwdriver to each valve cover and your ear to the other end, listen to the valvetrain. You can see which bank has the problem, and save yourself half the work.

BTW, I looked on the GMpartsdirect site last week and stock lifters are only $23.48 per pack of 8.
