How crappy are BBK shoty headers?

My motor is curently out of the car being rebuilt. I am on a tight budget but would like to do as much as possible while the motor is out. I am looking at either the chrome or ceramic coated BBK's for a 94. How is the ceramic coating? does it start to rust in a few years. Should i just get the chrome ones? How do they flow? My mods will be all bolt ons and a cam. Should i get these or the macs?

thanks
Shawn

I've had mine ( Ceramic Coated ) for about one year, no rust yet. Easy to install too.

I've heard that they absolutely suck as far as any track or hp gains go.

thats what ive heard. Ive always ranked BBK towards the bottom of the list for all the brands. But lots of people like them and have them. I actually had a set in my hands before, and they looked decent.

MAC's are one of the best shorties though

i've heard that the macs are quiet good actually as far s power goes. but everyone says that ugly grey coating comes off and then becomes even uglier rust. I don't have the money to buy a set of mac and then get them cermaic coated. I will probably just end up going with the macs.

thanks

I have a set of the chrome ones on my car. As far as the quality goes there seems to be 2 things that people often run into on them. First of all, the holes for the bolts sometimes seem to be a slight bit off, some people I have talked to had to use a dremel to slightly enlarge them. I did not have this problem how ever. Also, the one problem I did have is the passenger side header has the O2 sensor screw into it. There was a small weld in there that was blocking the sensor from going in. All I had to do was use a dremel for about 2min. and all was fine. As far as performance goes, I saw about .3 and 3mph in the 1/4 mile. I was very please with that. Also, this was when I only had CAI and catback exhaust. The low end tq and throttle response at low rpms was one of the biggest things that I noticed after installing them. To sum it all up, I would say for the price I am very happy with mine. I think there are better headers out there (LT) but I was on a budget.

Aaron

PS. Mine have just started to rust but the chrome still looks alright yet and this is after 2 years.

That seems like an awful lot, especially the 3 mph part. That would lead us to believe that you picked up ~30 hp with them. But hey, every car responds differently i suppose.

I agree, those are Long Tube header numbers...I wouldn't expect that out of BBK shorties...

Yea Im sure driving and weather also plays a part in that, but I seemed to have consistantly picked up about 3mph and about .3 with them. Also, with the CAI, and catback exhaust Im sure the stock manifolds were choking the air flow quite a bit.
