How to check the bottom end?

I have to replace my head gasket and I was relieved to find out that the motor does not have to come out. I have a 96 Z. However there is a 125K on the car. Is there an easy way to check the bottom end out for signs of major wear that would need a rebuild. I talked to a buddy of mine and he said that I might be able to at least take a look at the bearings by way of the oil pan. Any other Ideas on making sure the bottom is good?

Also instead of just fixing the head gasket I have thought to either have these heads worked a little or buy a new set of aftermarket heads or used, if in really good shape. Any thoughts on what to do to my current heads or what aftermarket heads to use? I am on a budget but could spend maybe 500-800 for heads.

Thanks for the help.

no real good way to check. dont worry about it. you would have to pop the rod caps off and check the bearings, and the main caps if you want to look at the main bearings.

not worth it. get under your car and see how much room there is for the oil pan to drop down
