How bad is too much fluid in an A4?

A friend of mine bought an A4 car and the tranny in it gave up the same day while he was driving it home.
The tranny was leaking a bit when he picked it up and then when I checked the fluid after he got home, it looked like it had too much. I think the seller just added a ton of it to make sure it doesn't leak too much to ruin the tranny before the sale.
So how bad is TOO much fluid in an A4? Could this have directly caused the failure or it may have just added to an existing problem?
Just wondering.

Too much is almost as bad or worse than too little. It causes foaming which replaces the fluid with air. That does no good for parts that need the tranny fluid to live.

Did you check the fluid level in Park and the engine is idling? When the engine is off, it'll give an over fill reading even if though the fluid level is right. Just a thought.

Yep, that's how we checked it. We also went through all gears waiting a few seconds in each and it still had too much. The tranny was shooting fluid all over the place. I'll take a look underneath there tomorrow and let you know what went wrong.

overfilling is commonly used by scam dealerships to hide a slipping transmission. It wont last long till you lose 3rd and 4th in the middle of indiana though. trust me i know, i had to give my buddy a 1 hr ride to the dealership, 1 hr ride back, 1 hr ride to pick it up and 1 hr home again  scamming salesmen

I dont think they expected him to drive several hundred miles in the first 2 days (like 5-600+) other wise they would have gotten away with it:irk:
