Yep, several of us has done this. Just buy a cone type filter from k/n and some pvc or conduit, a hose clamp and some paint and your in business for around $50. You can see a picture of mine here http://community.webshots.com/user/lunarson0167 I just bought some electrical conduit 3 1/2" OD and cut a section off and the k/n filter that's 7"or 7 1/2" long and 3 1/2" dia. There are several ways of doing it, in fact that to me was part of the appeal was that you can get creative and do it how you like instead of buying something mass produced.

In the neverending quest to achieve speed and power on a budget, I would say try it. On the other hand, the CAI systems on the market have some actual R&D behind them. That is why they cost what they do. Also, they know about the masses of Camaro's and TAm's out there and try to take advantage. I rigged one up way back but it ended up being too restrictive, good try though. Now, I have the Moroso CAI and boy does it do its duty. In my opinion, well worth the 189 dollars from your mail order. Search on different classifieds for F-bodies or Ebay, I think there was a K&N system there without filter going for no reserve, check it out and good luck adding more and more power!

Here's a fairly recent link to a thread about this--this guy had a pretty clean looking one.

the thread topic that never dies..lol

heres what i did..
just go to home depot or any "real" hardware store and get all the stuff you need from there.
here's my list i have on my car from there:
3" PVC, 3" 90 degree elbow, PVC cement, rubber hose fitting adapter, hole drilling bit, strong glue, (2) 3" stainless steel couplings with rubber inserts(much cleaner and better looking than the regular rubber couplings everyone else uses), spray paint, and a house floor heat grille. The go to either auto parts store or online and buy a air filter with rubber coupling.
Now just do a search in here on how to relocate the ABS unit and also a search on the install.

total cost for everything i spent = $60.00

just check in my Sig for pics of it.
