High Temps

my 93 Z concerns me...the temp goes up to around 240-245, it hits the point right before the red, then it starts going down...i was told this is normal...i dont think it is...any help?

Re: High Temps

Hi,
The 93 Z28's only difference from the newer ones is the batch fire fuel injection setup. Now that Ive clarified that...these cars stock do run unnaturally HOT. This is to lower emissions. However, getting that hot can be dangerous.
If you do not have one, think about getting a 160 thermostat. Secondly, (there are many ways to do this) set up the fans so they turn on at at least 180; 160 is standard. One way is to have an electrically knowledgeable person splice into the fans and run a toggle switch into the cockpit. This you would control yourself manually. Others have the PCMs control this.
Once the fans and the t-stat have been changed, you should see a change in temp dramatically. Beware, if it hot outside, like we are experiencing in So. Cal. around the 100's, the car will still run hot, but less chance of overheating.
Hope this helps.
Daniel

I had same problam when mine was stock and come to find out the secondary fan was not comming on at all. Scan tool figured it out. A bad relay. Make sure both come on. i would run it in the drive way all the way for cold up to the high point you mentioned. and note when the fans come on if they do at all. Then do the mods once you can confirm they are running.

There are a lot more difference which are major for 93's not just the batch fire. There also is no KM which can be raplced which sucks, you cant use any of those cool PCM flashers because its OBD1, it uses speed density and not MAF so it uses pre programed settings from a computerized table and engine vacum to figure out the proper settings, which doesnt account for engine deterioation as it gets older wich can make them run worse w/ high miles. There isa bunch of other gay stuff which makes them a pain in the ass. I know from experience.

You are right, 93's are in a year by themselves. I forgot all about those other damn differences. But the heating up is the same.
I think one would want the primary fans to come on or what they call the high speed fans.

do u have an air dam? mine broke so it started overheating, and i made my own custom one out of aluminum and it works perfect!

i checked fans, the primary runs, and when i put the AC on, the second one comes on, so both are working, the only other thing that i can think of is the Intake Elbow is cracked (torn)on the bottom, and the silencer is missing off the elbow...could this have anything to do with a bad miss around 5700?

Same here, my 93's is tearing along the TB but i dont think its effecting anything as the part which is torn is still around the metal lip of the TB.

I just took a 1LE elbow off my car cause I no longer need it. And I used it for about 2 weeks.
Will sell for $50 shipped
also have K&N Cold air intake

Re: High Temps

couple of things:

On the subject of 93's, you guys DO know that there's a website dedicated to 93's right?? www.speeddensity.org

Now, as for the fans, IIRC the temps are 210 for the 1st fan and 224 for the second fan, or at least somewhere right around there. If your car is heating up to that during low speed driving or extended idling, that's considered normal as you have no airflow going through the radiator. If your airdam has been compromised, that could definitely be a contributing factor.

Now, if it's warming up to those temps at highway speeds or really really fast, you may have a couple of things to check: Check your thermostat to make sure it's functioning. They do fail and it's pretty much recommended to annually change them. Another think to think about is if you've recently had the system open, you could have a trapped air pocket, so maybe try bleeding the system.

The intake elbow and lack of a "donkey dong" (or air silencer in more technical terms) won't have an effect. There's nothing metering air in the intake ducting on a 93, and as such a tear won't affect it.

Lastly, if you can, try to scan the car and see just what the computer is seeing for a temp. The temperature sending unit for the gauge is located in the driver side cylinder head and is VERY inaccurate. The one in the water pump is more isolated and sends it's readings to the computer, so a disparity could easily exist.

solved problem... put a 160 degree thermostat in and put a Trick Flow Chrome Intake Elbow...thermostat fixed it
