Hei Distributor Conversion

Does anyone have a write-up or information about doing a HEI distributor conversion on an lt1? I have heard of people doing it to take the place of opti.....if so any information you may have would be highly appreciated.

thanks,
Jacob N.

Not possible unless you are getting rid of the computer, too. Besides spark and timing, the computer needs the opti signal for the fuel injectors.

think you have to buy the intake from GM for a carb and hei
i may be wrong, i was going to do mine that way but you have to pull motor out to put dis. in i think

I am just trying to find a way to get rid of the opti....the delteq sucked worse than the opti....i thought about buying a msd opti...but i hate the thought of spending almost 500 dollars on something not knowing what the hell to expect.

While there have been some problems with the MSD Optis, I still believe the MSD is this the best option for LT owners. With the upgraded rotor screws w/ thread-locker and square O-ring, my MSD has been working great in my LT-4 bracket car.

What about the Vortec dizzy? Is it possible to make it work?

I've heard rumors of someone putting the Opti optical sensor in a conventional distributor. It would work, if you could fit is in there.

But, all things considered, my engine's been running for 8 years now off only the optical sensor, still mounted in the Opti case. I did do a "vented" conversion though. A friend of mine with an identical setup made 1,125 very reliable HP in an 8,000rpm LT1 using the stock optical sensor.

I would not write off the Opti because of your experience with Delteq. I've seen at least one post at this point (not on this board) from someone who could not get the Delteq to work satisfactorily, and claims the people at Delteq recongized that the unit simply would not work right on some LT1's and refunded their money.

I think the LTCC makes more sense, and my setup is similar, with the 8 LS1 coils, but I don't have first-hand experience with the LTCC.

What is your set up Fred? You said it was LTCC similar, now I'm curious.

Opti optical sensor sending cam and crank reference to a MoTeC M48Pro ECU, with the MoTeC IEX 8-channel ignition driver firing 8 LS1-style coils. Its not my design.... I stole it from George Baxter's 9.05-second 30th SS convertible.
