Headlight control modules interchangeable??
Headlight control modules interchangeable??
I have a 97 WS6 T/A and I'm having an issue with my headlights. Everything is fine when I turn the lights on. Both raise correctly. The problem comes when I want to turn them off. The drivers side lowers correctly but the passenger side isn't sensing when it is completely lowered and so the motor stays engaged in the lowering direction but it actually brings the headlight back up until the acutator arm binds (because it is being raised in the wrong direction) I know is a little confusing to follow. So things that I know aren't the problem are 1. the motor (works in both directions) 2. gear (new brass units installed). So I'm guessing it the Headlight Control Module (HCM) located behind the driver headlight. I unplugged the weatherpak connectors and mine seem OK. There is some electric grease inside and nothing is corroded like I have heard that some units are but maybe it has just gone bad (It's nearly 7 years old!) Are these interchangeable between years. Do Camaros have HCMs? Thanks for any input.

Normally when the headlight goes down then immediately goes back up it is a broken plastic stop.
Take a look at the headlight which works correctly and you'll notice a plastic stop about the diameter of a pencil. The raise/lower arm hits this stop.
Now take a look at your "bad" headlight and see if this stop exists. I'll bet it probably doesn't
Buying a new one of these is pretty much out of the question because you'll have to purchase the lighting mounting assembly which is big $$$. Instead, most people just use a bolt and couple nuts and make their own stop

Brent-- Thanks for the quick reply. That's exactly what the problem was. I was all set to buy an HCM. Thanks for saving me some $$. Now I'll only have to go to my nut and bolt jars to find something to work. I don't see a real easy way to fix it because the motor mounts flush on the oppisite side of the assembly but I'm sure I'll be able to figure something out. Thanks again.

Excellent!
Yeah, the fix isn't easy because there is no real good way to get down in there. But I know of a number of people who have done it so with some patience and some busted/cut up knuckles, you'll be good to go
