head experts, need help
What are the largest size valves that will work with stock seats?
I thought i was getting my heads done, after the local speed shop looked at them I was quoted for: Valves(2.02/1.60) - $160 Seats - $160 3 angle valve job - $200 Machine the seat pockets - $150 Bronze liners - $200 Mill surface flat - $100 Total - $970.00!!!!!! I nearly s#@! myself. That's crazy just for a valve job and no port work. What can be done that is a little more pocket friendly? Name of the Game - Horsepower/Dollar:p |
The consensus is to stick with a 2.0/1.57 valve combination on the stock seats.
Here's a really good thread on the subject: http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...largest+valves Good luck. -Mindgame |
Thanks for the response mindgame, that was a good thread. Anyone else?

You can ask Phil Skarodom or Nighttrain 66... they do great head work.

Name of the Game - Horsepower/Dollar:p Seats arent that expensive, I assume that's cutting out the stockers and pressing in the old ones though... $200 VJ? Bit expensive, I wouldnt expect to pay that unless it was something along the lines of a 55deg race vj, which you dont want. $150 for spring seats is astronomical. $30-40 is normal... Bronze liners aren't terribly expensive, the liners themselves are maybe $1.50-2 each depending, and there's a couple hours in installing, an then honing them to the proper tolerances. I think that's about $70 too high. Quality machine work is surprisingly difficult to find, and it CAN be expensive since most shops are small and have no choice but to farm the stuff out to guys who dont care about it... I know I wouldn't deal with ppl who dont do their own machinework (unless you're just going for stock rebuild type stuff), but that's way high IMO. As far as valve sizes go, it's an old argument with alot of speculation from people who don't actually work with the stuff... or if they do, they aren't seeing the forest for the trees ;). You can run a 2.02 valve in a stock seat, and while theirs may not be, my VJ is different & takes advantage of it... it's pretty simple. That said, on this stuff, there's usually no reason to run larger than a 2.00" in this lt1 stuff :). |
For NAPA to do mine....3 Angle Valve Job stock valves, new seats installed, and milling was 200.00. I ported the heads myself though

Thanks for the input guys. How will big flow numbers affect port velocity, and how will they work with a relatively small cam, like a hotcam? I know this could turn into a deep discussion, just looking for some general insight.

Do a search on Lloyd Elliott. He is a good porter for the money. Shoot him an email and he will quote you a price. He was dead on in his pricing (as far as the initial quote and final cost).

Again thanks for the input guys. I shot nighttrain an email last night. I'm sure he responded, but i can't check my email from where I am.
Thanks:D |
