i'm no gearhead but i will tell you that i think i like my 2.73's.
other than the fact that there is a horrible deadspot at like 30mph because it won't downshift to first. the 2.73's cause the car to just hook and go!....there's no spinning, that's for sure.
like i said, i dont' know alot about gears, but it makes sense to me that since LT1's are good low end engines, the higher gears would help the top end. where using lower gears (higher numerically; ie. 3.73) with this much low end power would only screw up our launches (traction issues) and rob our top end acceleration as compared to 2.73's or even 3.23s.
i previously had an M6 with 3.42's and it was alot of fun but my A4 with 2.73's is 2 tenths quicker with the same setup, and it has a slightly better 60' because it hooks up better.
and i love the 2.73 gearing for cruising...when you punch it between 50 and 80mph, it downshifts to second and melts your boxers (or briefs?) to your seat!

Sean, it makes me question my switch from 3.42 to 3.73. Maybe some day I will get it to the track. Hopefully since it is a M6 I may have different results
And congrats on the 8.19 NA run. The vid was great. That 110K miles Trans Am will suprise alot of unsuspecting LS1 and Mustangs owners. I am so jealous.

2:73's to 3:42's gave me 2/10ths in the 1/4 and 1 mph. Gas mpg about the same, traction OK, drivability much better that the 2:73's anyday.....

yeah, i'm still having the exact same decision making problems... i was initially gonna go with gears, and now i'm not sure what i want to do. i have $800 to spend, so i'm still trying to figure out which route is the best one to go...

but, from what i've heard... in an A4... a torque converter ( i'm gonna use a 3200 stall ) with a shift kit and a tranny cooler will produce the best results ( roughly a full half second drop in ET ). i know a guy with an A4 who swears up and down that the converter is the absolute best mod you can put on an A4 and that it's the first thing you should do. i know a guy who said he'd get me a TCI 3200 converter w/ TransGo shift kit and a tranny cooler for $710 to my door. the only reservations i have about that is that i haven't heard all good things about the TCI. i was considering going with a yank or midwest...

there's other routes to go as well... you could get some hooker LT's or some other headers with an off-road y-pipe, a K&N FIPK... etc etc... there's a ton of things you could do.

personally, i'm still not sure what i'm gonna do. i was even considering getting a new hood and some new side skirts with my $800... but i just can't decide which route to go yet.

btw... anybody know a site where i can check out some midwest and/or yank torque converters?

So would a 3200 stall be good for street driving too?
i have a 2800 stall on my 3:73 and luv the combo, good gas milage and good low end torque, if you have pretty much stock car ide say go with this combo, you can see my sig and see what mods i have on my car

2800 would be great on stock gears, i could have gone a little higher on the stall but got a good deal on this one

Note having the "E" means you dont have to worroy about the 1-3rd shift on a stall over 2800 I went with a midwest stall and have no complaints on it at all. but I would get Hedders and any other quick cheap bolt on before a stall IMO a stall will kill gas milage too.

2.73s drove me nuts First gear went to 40 somthing and still could not hook with 3000-3200 vig. 3.42 are very nice but I would like a 3.23 if i had to do it again. I drive a lot of highway and at 80 I am at 3000rpms.

so I'm just trying to understand this stuff.....the stock gears are 2.73 but is that for both auto and manual? I'm not an expert but I can put some knowledge into gears because I have 2 nitro powered R/C cars that can kill most every car to about 60 mph (yeah!) This gearing stuff is prolly the same idea. For example it takes the 2.73 gears 2.73 time around for the wheel to spin once. Also that the lower the gear, the slower acceleration is but the faster top speed(saying w/o the govern)and the higher the gear, the faster the acceleration but slow the top speed. So what's prolly gunna be my best bet if I drive my car everyday and still wanna have good gas mileage but want more acceleration? 3.23's or 3.42's maybe
