GTP vs. TA

Hey guys,

My car is down for spark plug wire change (love those headers) and my friend has been hinting a race with his dad's Pontiac GTP. here are the specs.. 2000 GTP with 3.4'' pulley, custom CAI, PCM, and a single 3" exhaust just put in. He says the boost is either at 12 to 14... I do know the car is fast but who has the upper hand here?

thanks for your input!

you should have the upper hand.
My buddy has a GTP w/ a ported/polished blower, CAI, and exhaust. In town its a decent race but i do pull quite a bit on him, and on the highway i slaughter him. You also have more done to your car than mine, so you should take him.

Even with his mods, it should still swing in your favor. But it can easily be a drivers race.

My bro and I used to own GTPs and modded them. Our cousin at the time had a 6spd 94 Formula. It was all stock except it had a Fipk and cutout. I had a 3.25 pulley/Intake/3"dp, rockers, DHP on my GTP and my bro had pretty much the same except had a 3.4 pulley.

Race went like this:

From a dig I would get the immediate lead. My bro would be a car-1/2 behind and our cousins formula would be in 3rd a car behind my bro. At 40 he was passing my brother. At 50 he was passing me. And by 60 he was putting cars on us. We didn't even bother racing from a roll.

Now back to you. Your buddy has less mods on his GTP and you have more mods than our cousin's Formula. You will hand that GTP his ***.

I had a 99GTP with FWI, 3.25 pulley, NGK plugs and custom tune and could beat LS1's that were stock to lightly modded all day long. I think that you will get the GTP .. FWIW i only was making like 12-13 psi with a 3.25 pulley. Good Luck

Don't run him for a short distance. Roots blower = monster torque out of the hole. In the 1/8th or the 1/4 you should be ok, but don't let your gaurd down. And don't run him street light to street light unless you pass several in the middle...

Then see if you can drive it, those things are a blast. I hated to sell mine.

That Formula also ran 13.50s all day long Kevin.

The race will be alot closer than you think, especially if the GTP has a cold motor.

I raced a friends GTP w/ similiar if not more mods, back when I had my 93 A4 LT1 w/ rr's,catback,CAI and from a roll it was dead even until I pulled him in the top end around 70 mph slowly started to pull. Never raced from a stop. But my 93 had 100k and bad rings(burned some oil).

I know for a fact w/ your M6 from a roll you will definitly beat him if you can drive it right. Those GTP auto's suck and you will have a huge advantage from a roll race. That extra gear makes a hell of a difference from a roll.

From a stop you may still have the edge because those GTP's w/ lots of torque and FWD make for a messy launch, the two motors should be about on par when it comes to torque considering his mods.

Eitherway you will pull them at higher speeds, mainly because of their A4 and lack of top end. From a roll it'll be an easy win if you keep racing until 120ish. From a stop prolly more of a fight, depends on your launch. You will pull hard through 2nd though.

With those almost exact mods in my GTP i was running 13.8@99 with a 2.0 60'

I don't see how he could have 12 lbs of boost with only that stuff.

If you have a 6 speed you will win easy.
If you have an auto with 3.23s you will win also.
If you have an auto with 2.73s it will be close.

oh yea my 93 had 3.23's so that may have been the difference up top.

What would a 3.4" pulley give him for boost then?

They run 6-8 psi of boost with the stock 3.8" pulley. However, if you start adding other mods to the car, that will effect the boost levels as well so it is hard to put a precise number on it. Depending on the mods though, a 3.4" pulley can see anywhere from 8-11 psi.
