Grinding 2nd gear, WHY?

Recently, any time I accelerate hard and go to shift into second gear, it grinds. It is a T-56 with a centerforce clutch. What could be causing it and what are my options? Just what I need before my cam and head install.

Could be several things. I have heard those clutches are a little thick and stay engaged longer therefore the tranny could be spinning a bit too fast.

Could be your second gear syncronizer. Seems when people race, they usually tear up the 2nd gear syncro.

When the clutch was put in, was the input shaft splines cleaned and lubricated with high temp brake caliper grease?

Is there a lot of effort to shift?

Rule out the external things and what's left aint so great.

I fogot to add in that I have a Hurst shifter also. I don't know if that helps at all.

It's not hard putting into gear when it doesn't grind, but when it does grind, I have to let off and try again.

Your second gear syncronizer is bad. And by the way I can't believe this. I was raised in Willingboro. What area are you from? I went to Trenton State.

If you ever need front end work like alignment only go to Marty Steiner on 130 This is unbelievable.

Any idea how much new syncros cost? I have heard around $200 installed, is that about right?

If you take the car to the mechanic as aposed to just taking the tranny it's gona be expensive. they will probably jab you for 8 to 10 hours labor. Here in VA it's $65 to $70 per hour.

Call an independent garage to have them look up how many hours it takes before deciding.

Damn, I thought $200 would b a lot, I guess popping out of reverse isn't worth $600. I will just leave it for that price.

I live on Burrs rd right off of Jacksonville rd, I used to work at Golden Dawn Diner in Willingboro until 98 as a busboy. I've been to Marty Steiner before, they do good work.

Everyone seems to agree that my synchros are bad. Are there better ones that I can upgrade to? I heard that u can rebuild it with Viper T-56 internals, if this is possible, where can I get the parts from. My trans is coming out when I drop the motor out to do my head and cam swap anyways, so I might aswell do it then. Thanks for all the replies. Tom

I don't know much about those or the parts for them. Try this link and see if they have any answers.

My parents still live in Willingboro. The next time I'm in town I will look you up.

It is so weird to find someone from home.

Hope you get your problem resolved with little money.

good luck

Dave
