Got my heads for my 396... Canfield 220's

Figure they'll be a good match for the 396. Doubt I'll see another car with them either (I have heard this is the only set in existence).

Are they straight out of the box or are they ported real nice ? I've heard they dont flow well right out the box. But if they're ported real good they're suppost to be awesome. I wanted a set for awile, then I started hearing good and bad things.

I don't think they ever advertised these heads; they were never available to the public. This set was originally sold to March Performance (March pulleys) and they ended up not using them. The 220's flow nearly 300 unported. These have the larger 2.08 valves and some light bowl work at this point. They'll probably end up getting quite a bit more.

I have talked to my porter and he said there are other castings for a Chevy that when max ported he can get more out of.The Canfield's for a F*** are a different story.

Cool!

I've got a set of Canfields on a 396 as well. Flow 310

The only problem... engine still on engine stand because I work too much But, if I didn't work so much I wouldn't have had the money to buy it Hmph.

Well, the price of these heads had a lot to do with the reason I bought them. I am guessing the other heads that can be max ported would be about double what I paid for these before the portwork.

I just think it's neat that I'll have something that you won't see everyday. Heck, I have a buddy with a 396 Z just a few miles from here with AFR's. When I said Canfields he looked at me funny.

RedHottG2 is right... then Canfield 220 heads are terrible out of the box (especially considering the port volume). I remember when Bryan Cope flowed his Canfield 220's - they peaked at ~230cfm intake and ~160 cfm exhaust! Some good port work got the numbers up where they needed to be.

Sure you aren't talking about 200's? I have a flow sheet from Canfield and one from a place in Topeka Kansas and they both show upper 280's, lower 290's.

I can not find anything anywhere on the internet about the Canfield 220 LT1's, just the 200's.

OK, here are the flow numbers of them:

Intake
.400 243
.500 257
.600 271.5
.700 289

Exhaust they are lacking a bit compared to the AFR 220 LT4 race heads

Exhaust:
.400 167.2
.500 186
.600 198
.700 204

These are out of the box flow numbers, not ported. Looks like there is a lot that can be done to them to make them better and I'll still have over $1000 less in them than a set of comparable AFR220's.

The people that posted flow numbers, are you sure they were 220's? I was under the impression that the only set ever built ended up at March Performance Pulleys. This is that set.

Any input is appreciated.

Ryan,

Cope's heads were 220's, but they were the Gen 1 SBC heads. There were no changes between the 200cc gen 1 and LT1 head (except the intake bolt pattern and minor changes to the water passages), so I'd assume that your LT1 220's are virtually the same as the gen 1 SBC 220 version. Did you have them flowed yourself? In any case, they should do pretty well with a good port job ... I wouldn't want to stick them on 'as-is', though!

Thanks, Eddie. I plan on getting them ported before they go on.
