Gears finally going in....

am changing out my (Cough *Shty* Cough) 2.73 gears with 3.73 gears this week. I worked all day the last two days to afford them. I am going with STRANGE 3.73 gears, the install kit, and the pcmforless all at the same time. Anything I should know before I have the shop put them in? I am sticking with the 2series carrier too, why would I whanna spend another $100 for a 3 carrier? I'll keep you all updated.

P.S. Hopefully this will put me into the 13's, I live at a damn 3800ft elevation.

I run the same gears but have a 3-carrier. Most shops will install them with a backlash setting of 8 to 12 as I recall. Strange recommends a 6 to 8. I installed them at the 8 to 12 ratings and get a lot of whining but I got many opinions from professionals saying a setting of 6 to 8 was too low and would wear out my gears. I would have your shop call Strange and see what they come up with.

Personally, the next time I do gears (unless I upgrade to a 12-bolt) I will be getting Motive 4.10's or will go with the Precision Gear 4.10's which I had pretty good luck with before.

Backlash is what is considered the amount of play or slop in a gear set. A zero backlash means there's no play between the pinion gear and ring gear. If you grab the gears and tried to wiggle them they wouldn't move with a zero backlash. A backlash of 10 to 12 (actually, it's something like .0010 or .0012 but for the sake of discussion I just use whole numbers) means there's more play in the gears and you'd be able to wiggle them slightly. To determine the backlash they will use what is called a dial indicator. The dial indicator is held to the rearend with a magnet and, for lack of a better term, a sensor pin is placed on one of the gear teeth. The gears are wiggled and the dial shows how much backlash is on the gears. They then remove everything and re-shim it until the desired backlash is found and then a pattern is checked.
