I have a 96 A4 with 3.23s in it now. That is if what I was told is correct. If I change to 3.73 or something to that sort would I notice a gain, or would I just make the gas milage worse?I am open to any suggestions???

Ive heard that 3.73's are the best for a4's. Do a search and you'll find lots of good info.

I had 3.23 and moved to 3.42 for better mid range, plus i do lots of highway driving, and didnt loose MPG( maybe a mile or 2)... But if you are not worried about MPG go with 3.73...

I have a 1996 Formula with the GU5 option or 3.23 gear. My car is an auto & I went to a 3.73 then back to a 3.42. The 3.73 is pretty steep for a street car plus the install was so bad I had it replaced with the 3.42 gear which is best for an auto trans. If your car has the 3.23 gear I would not change due to the expense plus most times the rear will whine after a gear swap, hard to make these run quiet. You might want to try a torque convertor swap instead there is info on this site.

3.73 are the best gear to go with for an A4 car... Unless you don't care about gas mileage... My buddy has 4.11's in his A4 car!

Decide on whether you just want better 1/4 mile times or a better gear for all around driving. Having driven my car with the 3.23, 3.42 & 3.73 gears the 3.42 is best for a street use car. The difference between a 3.23 vs 3.42 gear is not worth the expense.
If all you want is acceleration a 3.73 might be best but that will depend on type of tires, etc.

Motive 3:73's is what i am going to here in about a month. I have 3:23's now. I can't wait to see what its like. Course my Trans go shift kit should like it, but gonna have to get some new tires.

The gears shouldnt whine unless they were installed incorrectly. I have 4.10's that dont even whine. My friend alex told me to order this thing to keep them from whining. Its like a cruch sleeve that doesnt crush or something. Well the place i went to knew what i was talking about. It worked because they dont whine at all.
