A friend of mine has been battling a low-rpm stumble for several months now, and I ruled it down to the fuel pump. He drove down from NY to southern New Jersey at my place this morning, and went to work replacing his fuel pump with a Racetronix pump and harness using my "through-the-hatch" method (seen here. ).

I'd say it turned out quite well. The stumble is gone, and his car runs great! This might be another cause of that low-rpm stumble that everyone is battling.

 

When my pump craps out, thats how i'll be doing it...

I'm not dropping that rear again til I put new springs in, LOL

 

Man, that's a really nice job cleaning everything up after it's all said and done. Nice job!

 

I know this is a stupid question, But how did you get that hole there. What did you cut it with. That seems like a very interesting way of doing the fuel pump and very easy way of doing it.

 

I used half-a-dozen cutoff wheels and a Dremel at 28,000RPM going slowly. Don't want to cut too deep.

Just cut a peice of sheet metal and use self tappers to reinstall? Also whats the red stuff you covered it with?

 

I used a thin piece of spare heater ducting I had in my house. Drill holes and use 1/2" sheet metal screws to hold down the plate, RTVing the cover to the hatch area to keep out exhaust fumes.

The red stuff is "paint."

Krylon Medium Red blends with the stock paint perfectly!

I used tin snips for my fuel pump install and it came out very clean as well. Looks good.

 

how much clearance is there between the tank and the underside of the car?

im going to mount an amp rack to mine and i dont want to go to deep.

Well done man thsts the only way it shold be done.

 

Between the sheet metal of the body and the fuel tank, you have about 1/2" to 3/4" of clearance. The lines sit slightly higher, so you'll want to be VERY VERY careful.

 

I dont this myself and its not that hard. I would suggest it to anybody. Although mine didnt come out that clean (thank GOD for carpet) It still worked pretty good. good job man

 

Nice work Joe. I am doing mine right now and had a question about the interior trim that goes up sides in the rear (next tot he rear seats and then up to the hatch). I can pull the carpet back unless I remove those panels on each side. How do they come off? Do I just pull and they'll pop off?
