Few ?'s for the tranny speciallists (especially converter)!
allright,
i just got off of the phone with the local shop that is going to rebuild my a4. he quoted me a good price for the rebuilt with "red" clutches and servo's and other tranny jargon?? it sounded good and he said it will be a pretty tight unit and will support the times that i would like to run. then we were talking about stall converters and he asked what size i was going to run. i told him that i was looking around a 3000 stall converter. he told me that i would be way overstalling my motor and gave me the number of another local guy (csi converters) that would build me a custom converter for my cars specs (tire size, gear, cam, motor......) the guy also said that this guy makes the best converters around and will give me a helluva deal. when i asked about the converter diameter, he made it sound like the guy was rebuilding factory converters.
my question is: does converter size really play a big role in performance?
would you buy a converter from this guy, or stick with the original plan of a midwest 2800-3000 converter?
the guy at the tranny shop said that almost everyone reads off of the internet what converter to put in and they all overstall their motors and this can cause pre-mature engine/tranny wear? i just don't wanna screw anything up and want to pick the right converter. could someone chime in as to what they think of all of this.
thanks guys

Thats cool, I'm no trans expert either, but I've done a couple with someone helpin, the first 4gen (4l60e) trans I did not long ago ended up working great. Shifts hard and should be a lot stronger b/c of some aftermarket parts i could find. You should be happy with that.
As far as converters go, I'm really no expert here, but I think they use a smaller dia. converter b/c it's less rotating mass. Someone else might chime in on this but thats how i take it.
As far as what converter to pick, we used the stock one on the trans we rebuilt, it was put behind a 383 and I think it works great. The higher stall would probably promote more wheelspin which would hurt our 1/4mile times more.(We were on street tires yes but you see what i'm saying). It's hard to say what kind of converter you need, I'd say pick a tighter one than you need if you plan on driving on the street. maybe a 2 to 2200? But like i said, no expert here

Go for your original plan and disregard the "tranny guy"...
On a 2800 stall Vigilante and a few bolts ons I whacked the 12's....
The car feels perfect... perfectly streetable and killer launches. 2000-2200 is only a little higher than stock, useless.
I'm actually going to jump up to a 3200 stall soon (just have mine restalled)..

you said vigillante, i was thinking about a midwest 2800 converter with my setup. what do you think about those converters. i will still go with the tranny from this guy but i think i will buy my own converter.

what makes vig. so much better?
is it really worth the extra money ~400.00?
i could get a midwest 2800 for around 250 or a vig for 650-700?
i just wanna make the right decision
thanks guys

I have that same Midwest 2800-3000 converter. Bought it from John at HPA last year. That guy is total customer service and those Midwest converters are recieving outstanding reviews for the price. Check ls1.com and search for Midwest, most guys are listing their times.
converter
you need to check your pricing. a 2800 stall, any str you want, 10 inch converter with 12 inch lockup plate is what I have. the price was 489.00 delivered to my door. I am very happy with it, word of advice---GET DRAG TIRES(I have Nittos).
