Fan problem? (Cooling issue)
 

1996 Z28
Since winter i've had this problem and couldn't figure it out, My car is fine when i drive it but when I sit and let it idle it will over heat. now my question is what the hell could be causing this problem?? First looked and the fuse was blown so We put a new one it started it up and it blew right away, I tried replacing the fan motor but that didnt work. (may take that back if its not needed save $30 lol) I still have to check the relays but what would cause the fuse to blow instantly or shortly after the car is started everytime? Any help would be great or if you have any questions that i didnt cover drop em. Thanks Guys.

unless you know its your fan it could be something else. After spending a week trying to find out what was wrong with my fan i found out my weird temp problem was caused by a badly clogged cat beside my manifold.

If you do a search on blown fuses, bad air pump etc. you will get a lot of good info on this subject. Shoebox has a good cooling site too so try to look that up. I don't have it in front of me or I'd post it. Check all the underhood fuses. There's more than one that is related to the fans. I found that I would blow the air pump/ cooling fan fuse. When i replaced it and started the car, it would blow again right away like you describe. So i did some searching and sorta figured that my air pump was bad. I never had the recall done so it all sorta fit. So i unplugged the connector for the airpump and put in a new fuse and now my fans work again and the fuse doesn't blow anymore. Before my fans wouldn't come on at all... even with the a/c on. Some people say that on 96 cars that are OBD2 you will get an SES light with the air pump unplugged. I have never had an SES light come on and i think that my air pump hasn't been working for some time. I did verify that my SES light does work too. You could try unplugging the air pump and putting in a new fuse and see if that solves your problem. At least that way you'll narrow your problem down. By the way, the fans won't come on under normal circumstances until the temp goes way up unless you have the a/c on in which case they should come on right away. Good luck.

thanks man i'll start with the air pump, yea i knew the fans werent coming on because it would be at the third tick and going towards the red line when not moving. :\ yay for airflow i guess or i'd not be driving lol.

d/c the air pump and it still blew :\ I think its one of the wires going to try that tomarrow. Any other ideas? things to look for? helpful tips? thanks

I had a recall on the 95 air pump. Was having the same problem with the fuse. Might want to look into it for the 96. Not sure what years it was for

If its a smaller fuse than a thirty install a 30A.It is small enough to blow yet large enough to hold any elevated resistance from older wiring.
If it blows ya need to find out what else is on the circuit and disconnect one at a time until ya find it.
