engine swap...93 lt1 to a 97 lt1???
 

I have a 93 z28 that the engine let go, the guy i got the car from sold the heads and intake off of it. I am getting an LT1 out of a 97 TA. My question is, what all will i have to change to get it to work???

you shouldnt have to change anything except the computer and have a mass air and such i would expect because im pretty sure 93's are speed density

There seems to be a common misconception that a later model engine must use the later model computer and such. This is completely inaccurate. An LT1 is an LT1, how it's controlled is year specific (F-Body speaking, 93's were speed density, 94-95 were OBDI, 96-97 OBDII). That's just the computer. Your 93 car still has it's computer and wiring harness, simply re-use those.

Ok, things that WILL need to be changed or modded:

If the 97 is a long block, you CAN use the longblock including intake. What you'll need to get is a set of 94-97 fuel lines (part number 10258441 $15.88 @ gmpartsdirect.com) to properly mate up with the 94+ fuel rails. Simple thing really.

If the 97 motor has the opti on it still, you'll need the 95-97 opti wiring harness, which uses a longer plug than the 93-94 non-vented unit. it's about $60 bucks IIRC.

Simply leave the Crankshaft position sensor in place on the timing cover, it will not be used. If you'd like to delete it, get a 95 timing cover.

If you still have your TB, use it. If you don't and the 97 engine does, you'll need to purchase the 94-97 IAC pigtail and splice it in place of the 93 pigtail on your 93's wiring harness. The 93 used a 4 pin SQUARE connector for the IAC, the 94-97 cars used a 4 pin FLAT connector.

If you still have your 93 manifolds, use those, and you should be fine. I'm not 100% familiar with the 97 exhaust manifold EGR/AIR connections, but you should be able to connect everything if you don't have the 93 manifolds.

I think that's about it. It's fairly simple, and there's absolutely no reason to swap the 97 computer/wiring harness/MAF into the 93 car.

if you have an auto trans, you need a 92/93 throttle body(94 up didn't have the stud for the T/V cable)

I am building a CMC racecar and I have a 93 car and a 95 engine.

I do have the 93 engine as well, so I can just change the fuel rails, opti pigtail and throttle body and be ready to go.

If you're going to change the fuel rails you're going to need to run the manifold from the respective years motor they were on. The 93 intake manifold didn't have a crossover recession at the front of the manifold like the 94+ manifolds do. The bolt patterns are slightly different and you may run into issues trying to put the 93 rails on the 95 intake manifold. As mentioned before, for it to look right and ease of function, just swap in a set of 94+ lines into the 93 car so the 94+ rails can be properly utilized.

awesome! Thats about what i was thinking, but everyone kept telling me i had to swap the harness and everything...i figured that if i've still got the 93 harness and comp...then i just need to supply fuel to it and plug everything in. I have a pretty new opti off of the 93, will it go on the 97 engine, or will i have to use the 97 and buy the pig tail?

Thanks... Since this is a race car, I might just upgrade those lines to something a little better anyway.

If you want to use the 93 opti on the 97 motor, you're going to need to change the timing cover and timing set. The two covers had different sized holes for the opti drive, and I believe the 95+ timing set is slightly larger than the earlier styles. Easiest thing would be to just buy the 97 opti harness.
