Engine Died in Rain?

Ok here's my problem....

It was raining cats and dogs yesterday, and i'm driving along and all of a sudden the car backfires and dies. So I coast to an awning at a car wash. I try to refire thinking who knows, and it won't run except with the pedal all the way floored. So I open the hood and disconnect the MAF sensor and it fires right up. I drive it home and its running fine. What would cause that? I still have it unhooked waiting for the MAF to "dry?" out.

Any ideas?
I have a cold air intake that gets air from the lower right hand opening behind the turn signals. Could that be the culprit?

It does indeed sound like you got some water in there.

What will running it with the MAF unplugged do? Any potential damage? Also I am thinking of going back to a stock intake as I can not find any air filters to fit this CAI. Plus the nose on my car sits low and I don't really need a snorkel sucking up water all the time.

Nope....New plugs and wires, and they are tied up with wire looms to keep them off the headers.

What affect will driving with the MAF unplugged have? Super Rich? Too Lean? Diluted Oil?

It will keep the car in speed density mode. Should not cause an issue.

What he said.
No major effects except for reduced MPG's.
