Engine compression - 2 questions.

1. Is it possible for an engine to have low compression due to either worn rings or valves and not use any oil?

2. When I park my Camaro on the hill in my driveway and leave it in gear, it stays put without using the parking brake. I bought an LT4 Corvette this year and I have to use the parking brake to keep it from slowly rolling down the hill. Could this just be due to the different cam profile in the LT4 engine, like more valve overlap which would cause more cylinder pressure bleed off? Or possibly gearing? Both the Camaro and Corvette don't use any oil.

Nope. I popped the hood and saw the drivebelt turning with the car.

I know I could do a compression check to verify. But, I don't have a compression tester and I would rather not hassle with it.

hmm so your saying your car was on a hill creeping down, so you popped the hood to see if the belt was moving. Maybe you should just go buy a compression tester, there not very expensive. That would be better than sitting at the hospital trying to figure out how your car ran you over. A tester doesn't cost much, they take the guess work out and it's a nice item to have no matter what your working on. BE SAFE

I guess the overall question here is:

If an engine doesn't use any oil, can it still be low on compression due to wear?

Burn't or non-sealing valves can be the cause of low compression, and it may or may not burn oil. You can find this out with a leakdown tester, it will give you a more accurate indication of whats actually leaking.

Some engines may spin easier than others also. It just depends on how steep the hill you park on is and what gear your using. IMO I would always use the e-brake parking on a hill with a manual or auto anyway.
