EGR Question???
 

Ive been getting all kinds of missfires through out all of my cylinders, number 7 being the worse.....i have changed opti, plugs, wires, and fuel pump. I know my ceramic in my cats are broken and they need hollowed out. I hooked it up to autotap and it says 0% of my EGR system is working......I was reading in my hanes manual that it said if i dont get enough vacum from the exhuast that it will cause the EGR not to work properly. I was wondering if it would cause it to hessitate and missfire alot. Also how hard is it to replace or fix it, or what do u recommend...

block off the EGR and see what happens. It may be stuck open so it would be sucking in exaust all the time. It has caused cars to run crappy in the past.

You can test the EGR by getting to the back drivers side of the manifold and you will see the EGR valve. There is a plunger on the side towards the front of the car. You will be able to manually depress that plunger. If there is play in that and you can push it in, it should make the idle change. If there is no play and the idle doesnt change, then it is for sure a bad EGR. If it changes the idle and has play it may still be a faulty EGR.

This is how i blocked off my EGR and it has worked for a while now.

1: Remove the 2 bolts holding on the EGR valve (use a 1/2 open wrench, you cant get a socket back there) and take off the gasket.

2: Take the gasket and cut out a sheet of aluminum from a coke can in the shape of the outer edge of the gasket. I used 2 sheets for added strength. Then cut out a hole for studs to go through and another in the middle for the protruding part of the EGR valve. You will see what i am talking about when you get the EGR valve off. Do not cut out a hole for the top part in the EGR gasket as that is the part you are blocking off.

3: Put the gasket and the aluminum parts on the valve to make sure everything lines up and then put it back on. Be sure to tighten them down pretty tight to ensure it seals it up.

Thats it. It took me about 20 mins and hasnt given me any problems. Hope it works out for you.

I also heard that you can just take the vac. line off the intake and cap'em. Effectively shuting off the EGR.

yea, but if the valve is stuck open, then it will not fix it.

The EGR does not engage when you are sitting at idle, so if that is when you were getting 0%, then that's normal.

exactly.. the duty cycle works with engine load.. as you accelerate more the EGR will respond with a higher dyty cycle untill you max it out at 100%

I guess thats why i have 0% of it working...it was at idle when i was autotapping it.....guess ill just have to hook it up again.......thanks alot guys....BIG HELP!!!!!
