dyno results frm 383 cam swaps
hey guys just wondering if anyone has some dyno results before and after cam swaps. wanting to go from the cc305 to a GM 847 but trying to decide if i can justify it hp wise. results on stock castings in a 383 would be ideal but ill take whatever i can get. thanks
Re: dyno results frm 383 cam swaps
For a motor to work effectively it needs heads and cam to work together, I had a decent set of ported heads with a water downed hotcam and did high 300's, now im hoping with my custom cam that a little bigger, and still pass emissions to break the 400 mark (auto/12 bolt) we will see about that, but the fact of the matter is the combo has to work.

Re: dyno results frm 383 cam swaps
these heads dont flow anything crazy but i have to imagine they are quite a bit better than stock since there were a lot of huge imperfections in the casting and everything is smooth and flows better. anyways theres no way im putting heads on this thing, just cant afford it. and i realize the cam has to match what the heads will flow for optimum results. so what you guys are sayin is that without heads i wont see hardly any gain by going to the GM 847?
Re: dyno results frm 383 cam swaps
You will see gains over the 305 I just dont see how to justify the loss of street manners for the little power you will pick up. Ported heads are a must when going to a cam that size.
Re: dyno results frm 383 cam swaps
IMO I would rather send out my stock heads to get the best port job I could afford rather then swap the cams out. I believe you will get a bigger HP/TQ increase with some very good portwork then swapping cams.
Re: dyno results frm 383 cam swaps
yeah i dont have a doubt in my mind, that id get more improvement that way, but look at the difference in work and cost. i feel its a heck of a lot easier to sell my cam buy a different one and replace it along with springs, then to pay a heck of a lot of money to have my heads ported not to mention head R&R. ive decided im just going to hold off on the cam because it seems the general consensus is that i wont gain much with out heads to match the bigger cam.
Re: dyno results frm 383 cam swaps
I was running a cc306 on stock heads and no headers before and it couldn't breathe, upgraded to shortys and it got alittle better, then I slapped on some custom ported and polished heads and it was breathing easy and I couldn't even hear the cam lope anymore so now I'm going to a cc468 with the .584/.579 lift so I can make even more power and take advantage of my heads. If you ask me the gm847 cam is good but it's not better than any comp cams that has similar or better lift.

Where'd you get this ARP main studs to keep the windage tray for your LT1? I need them and also get a dyno tune in person, email tune's aren't very consistant and you could get better by tuning on dyno. My dad did my porting and polishing on my heads and they flow better than ported LT4 heads.
Re: dyno results frm 383 cam swaps
i was told that a 400 SBC arp stud kit for windage tray engines would fit with the stock windage tray on a 3.75" stroke. im not sure if i got the wrong kit or if it doesnt work at all. either way i took the windage tray nuts turned them upside down and welded a bolt to the now up side of the nut, (flat part) seated the nut down on the stud and it was perfectly high enough for the windage tray to clear. put on windage tray and nuts on top. i wish i would have taken a picture it looked nice for a custom set up and it isnt coming apart guranteed.
Re: dyno results frm 383 cam swaps
Well a setof LE1 heads with springs and cleaned assembled and milled are only 800$. You will be out a bit anyway. I would do the heads and keep the 305 cam.
You will be happy with it.
