Unhappy Dyno Numbers Are In

Well guys, I finally got to the dyno today. It was pretty depressing to see the numbers. Me and a buddy of mine went and video tapped the action. It was a cool experience, the first dyno I've ever saw done was my car. Anyways, the first run they ran in fourth gear, it put down 278hp/314tq. The second run they ran in third gear which ended up a little lower. I was pretty dissapointed with the results. The A/F ratio started out in the high 14's and slowly drifted down to the mid 13's. They said it was pretty close to where it needed to be. I was hoping for more like 290-295 hp. My buddy was hoping for 150 in his NX 2000, and he ended up putting down 151 hp on his third run. Those damn ricers

Just thought I would share the numbers with everyone and see what you all thought.

Hmm. You have a very similar setup to me. You can see my numbers in my sig.

The huge wheels/tires don't help and will cost you a little HP, but other than that, I'm not sure what to say. Get it to the track and see how she runs. Was it a Dynojet dyno or a Mustang Dyno? Was your CAI filter clean?

Don't get too hung up on the dyno numbers. It's just a relative figure anyway, and comparing them with everyones across the country really doesn't mean much. How the car runs is all that's important.

Re: Dyno Numbers Are In

It was a dynojet and the filter is pretty nice and clean. I imagined the wheels would bring it down a little but nothing very noticable. I wont be able to get to the track for a couple months, and by then I wont have the same setup. The car feels extremly strong and pulls nicely, thats why I was suprised with the numbers. One of the guys I talked to said thats close to where stock LS1 Ws6's are there.

For your mods, I thought that was pretty much in line.

Re: Dyno Numbers Are In

You dynoed pretty much exactly what I did. I have a Moroso CAI, Mac headers, a cat and a magnaflow muffler. I woudltn worry too much about the numbers, like stated before you cant really compare them to everyone elses. Every dyno is different. If you really want to know how fast your car is race something or go to the track and see how your car runs.

A buddy of mine had a '98 Z with a lid whose car trapped ~106. When racing from a roll, he would slowly inch away. By the time we got to 100mph, his rear bumper would be at my front bumper. We actually ran against each other at the track and with almost identical 60' times he trapped a fraction of a second faster than me and .5mph faster.

That leads me to believe in good weather I could probably trap 105ish which defniately seems a bit quick for "only" 278rwhp.

its more than likely the big wheels. i raced an ls1 w/ some big blingy 19's and i beat him, whereas a normal ls1 should pull a few cars on me to 100. it could have been something else wrong but bigger wheels waste ALOT of power. (i can feel the difference between my salad shooters and zr1s but they just look so nice)

Re: Dyno Numbers Are In

Well with the wheels, the stockers may let me get a little more power to the ground, but with the 18's I get alot better traction vs. bald street tires. I'm planning on putting mt et streets on the stockers.

Also, I've ran two stock ls1's and put 2-3 car lengths on them both everytime in the quarter.

Thanks for everyones replys, its good to know theres nothing wrong with the car.

You aren't too far off, my stock SS did 271/301 on the dyno. Do you have a scanned copy of your dyno graph?

Your a/f ratio seems a little higher than mine, I was hanging around 11:1.

Re: Dyno Numbers Are In

No, I dont have a graph yet. I had two runs. The second run (271.44/304.67) is printed out over RPM range while the first run (278.62/314) was printed out over the MPH. Why they did this I don't know. Also, I have a third print out which shows both runs on one graph over the MPH with the A/F ratio below. This one is really confusing because it has a hp scale on the left side and tq on the right. But they scales are different. Also since the two runs were ran in different gears, one is stretched out farther than the other one.
Sometime tonight I will try to get them scanned and a link to them.

thanks guys

I just realized that you had an Lt1 SS

The guy said that my numbers are close to what stock LS1 ss's put down on that dyno. See that is what is dissapointing. For all the money I've put in this damn thing and when I could have bought one of the 6 other Ws6's I looked at and had the same power as I do now.

Definetly true, swapping over from draglites to my 18s i felt a huge decrease in performance, though draglites are obviously much lighter than stock wheels so that was part of it i'm sure.

dyno numbers are fine, take it to the track let that be your indicator.

Isnt a M6 supposed to be in 4th gear on a dyno? Why would they run it in 3rd?

Obviously in third you are sacrificing speed for an increase in torque. They should use 4th gear for the 1:1 ratio from the engine through the transmission. Unless there is something I don't know about?
