dont side step the clutch with a street twin and drag radials

i was at the track on wednesday night, i heated up the bfg drag radials and let the clutch go at 3000. let me tell you how much of a bad idea that was. instantly sheered the left axle in half. so as you can tell im in need of an axle. so if any of you have some thing to sell for my 95 ABS no traction control ill be interested. im just letting people know as a warning, i dont even have anything do to the car except for hooker LTS, 3.73's, pcm4less, street twin and 1.6rr. 1st time i launched the car with those tires and that clutch. BOOM

I learned the hard way too.

The first mod that I did to my 96, was a Ford 9 inch,4.10 gears, detroit locker, with 35 spline axles. While I was putting the rear in I also put in a Centerforce dual friction clutch, and a Sphon torque arm. Also a set of mickey Thompson ET streets, on stock wheels. Sure fooled a lot of people, and beat a lot of LS1's, when I came off the line at 5 grand. I'd jump out about 2 car lenghts, and they'd have to play catch up. Then came the headers, ignition product, CAI and nitrous. The rear end on these cars are a waiting time bomb, just waiting to break at the wrong time. GM high tech mag had a rear go out on their way home from dyno tuning. Can yuou imagine a axle breaking at 100 mph? Scary thought.

The scary thought is the one that goes through your head when you see a tire and part of an axle go rolling by you on the freeway while you're doing 100 mph.

I'm now running a 391 ci engine that I had to build after I dropped, Or I'd like to think that my son dropped a hose clamp that bounce into the intake. It took a couple of months for it to find its way to the #2 cylinder intake valve. Oh well it was a good excuse to go through the engine. Who would of thought that a small hose clamp could bounce through one of the intakes holes.

I have a pair of axles that I need to get out of the garage. how does $50 shipped for both sound? I work for FedEx so I could get them to you fast.

Let me know

Not that I am trying to defend the well known weaknesses of the stock rear. But FWIW, even on a stocker an axle is very unlikely to break other than in first gear off the line. The torque on the rear is highest, by far, under those conditions. The only time I have ever seen an axle break other than a guy hit second gear really hard. Even there, it's likely that the damage ocurred at the launch.

Installing a street twin on a car with the stock 10 bolt and running sticky tires is a bad idea imo, unless of course you're ready to install a 12bolt/9" and just waiting to grenade the 10bolt. The 10 bolt isn't that bad when it's set up right and your not running a brutal grabbing clutch, that clutch is just way to harsh for the stock 10bolt. Heck, people break 12bolt gears with that clutch. My 10 bolt with 4:10's has survived lots of hard launches so far, I knew I wasnt going with a 12bolt for a while though that's why I stuck with the SLP clutch for now and it's holding up just fine.

Rich is right, its odd that you'd break an axle before breaking the gears or posi. I usually drop the clutch from 3000rpm with BFG drag radials as well and the stock rear end has held up fine for 2 years now, even with over 400hp at the wheels. In that time I've wiped out 2 McLeod Dual Performance clutchs, not the street twin but the ones rated for 450hp up to 7000rpm. The street twin must be pretty violent.

i have a complete not tcs rear with 3.42 for sale out of a 96

Question.

McLeod Street Twin clutch has to be bought with the flywheel correct?

I had my engine balanced with my stock flywheel. Is the new McLeod clutch going to have the exact same balance as the stocker?

I'm worried about a new flywheel throwing off the balance in my car...

I'm looking at the SPEC 3 as an alternative. I've got a SPEC Stage 2 with only 800 miles on it, then I spun a bearing. I don't think this clutch will be up to the task of ~425-445 rwhp.

On a side note, I'd let that clutch go for a reasonable price towards the one I need.

Dave, what I did was take my flexplate and have a balancing shop determine the balance on it, and transfer the same balance onto my twin disk flywheel when I did the M6 Swap.

But, the twindisk is neutral balanced, with a weight you can bolt on to give it the 'stock' balance. Up to you how you want to proceed.
