Does this sound right (oil change ?)
Well, last night i was hanging out with a few friends (couple of them work at mechanic shops). When i started my car, they heard a wonderful ticking that we believe is either piston slapping, or a lifter. One of the guys (has a LT1 in his s10), said that he has heard that if you add 1 qt. tranny fluid when u do ur oil change (1 qt. tranny fluid, 4 qts. oil), that it will take the ticking away since tranny oil does not foam.
Has anybody else heard this? Are there any negatives to this? |
Re: Does this sound right (oil change ?)

Re: Does this sound right (oil change ?)
Alot of people do it if they have a sticking lifter and the tranny fluid usually cures it.

Re: Does this sound right (oil change ?)
The tranny fluid is high in detergents, and cleans any gunk that may cause a sticking lifter. Some people use diesel fuel. Or you can go buy an oil additive thats made to be added to an engine.

Re: Does this sound right (oil change ?)
would that be used for a short period of time, or would you run it the entire 3k miles?

Re: Does this sound right (oil change ?)
Personally, I wouldn't do it on anything but an old junker engine I did not care about and as a last resort...but that's just me.

Re: Does this sound right (oil change ?)
puuting one quart of tranny fluid in with 4 or 5 quarts of motor oil will not hurt a thing, it will help in cleaning out the sludge buildup in the crankcase and all the oil passages. Run it for 1,000 miles or so and then run Mobile one Synthetic.

Re: Does this sound right (oil change ?)
usually i would only run 1/2 qt if I was gonna leave it in there. atf also breaks up a lot of carbon. been bringing rotaries back to life for a long time using the atf trick
