Diagnostic test first or just replace optispark???

My car is still missfiring. Its not the plugs and wires because they are brand new and i checked them. Its not the injectors. I took the car to the shop to have them all cleaned. I don't think it is the coil wire because it would affect all the cylinders the same. My #1 cylinder has a really good spark. My #3 has a weak spark. I only got like $300 right now. The dealership wants $180 to diagnose my car. But if i have them do that i won't have enough money to get a new opti if they thats the problem. So basically do you think it could be anything else then the opti. Do you think i should just replace the opti and hope that is what it is or just take it to the dealership to find out for sure.

Also the people i bought the car from told me that there waterpump went out on them. They said it leaked onto the distributor. I don't know if they replaced it or not though and i lost their number so i can't call.

NEVER pay a dealer more than $65.00 to diagnose anything. Rule number 2 don't go to a dealer.

I agree with you if what you say is true. A coil problem would show up all the time or randomly. Not on just one plug.

Has to be a distribution problem. Get the opti from Dal Slabaugh. The vented one from him is $198.00 and you'll have in 2 days. Before you buy it, disconnect all the connectors to the opti and at the ECM and reseat them. check the pins. Shouldn't do anything but wackier S@#$ has happened.

good luck

If you have an Autozone nearby, take it to them and have it scanned for free. Take that information and do what you gotta do. $180 to get a car diagnosed that is rediculous.

How did you test for the strong/weak sparks? I'd like to check my car.

Well i can't take it to autozone because i am in california. They don't do freescans over here. I decided to just replace the opti and go from there. The way i tested my spark was by removing the spark plug. Then putting in back into the wire and putting it next to a ground. Then have somebody start the car to see how much spark you get. But don't leave it on for to long just a few seconds to you can see how good of a spark you get.

I dont think freescan will help much.
When my opti went bad it threw out all kinds of wrong codes.

You never mentioned the miles on the oem opti. If you have a high mileage opti, then I would take a chance and replace it now and see if that fixes the problems. On the other hand I have replaced optis with like 10k miles on them trying to track down a miss only to discover the Opti was good and the cuprit was something else.

The car has 50,000 on it. As for the opti i don't know. The person i bought it from said that they replaced the waterpump when it went out and leaked all over the distributor. But they didn't mention if they replaced the distributor or not.

I removed the egr stuff totally, and air system also. I have had a missfire above idle and it is driving me nutz. I replaced the IACV cuz it was stuck out and I had a high idle. I did the rag in the intake thing and found out I had a bad intake gasket so I swapped that and polished the intake while it was off.I swapped computers with my buddies 94 Trans AM and it ran way better! But still had the missfire right above idle but past that it ran its *** off! I tried his MAF to eliminate the Granetelli I got.
I put in the Painless Wiring harness because the wires on the stock one were a little discolored in places. Ive checked my plugs wires by swapping the old ones and doing an ohm meter check and replaced the plugs. I checked the coil and the controller. I put new dielectric grease behind the controller cuz the old stuff was worn away and cracked. I checked the TPS and voltages are ok. What else could it be

mine sounds like a optispark also
