dead motor, what to do?
dead motor, what to do?
my motor is dead. it was confirmed by a mechanic. he gave me two choices, i could rebuild this one or get a different one. mine has 165+k on the motor. is it worth the rebuild or should i go to a boneyard and find an lt4 and start off with that motor. or do i find a place that sells kits already built up?
i only have a little money now but i can get more in a while. what do you guys recommend?
any help would be much appreciated

Re: dead motor, what to do?
How much money do you have to spend? An LT4 i think would cost you at least 3k just for a complete long block. You could almost build a pretty good heads and cam motor for that. $1500 for a good short block, then heads and cam and other supporting parts would be about 2500 when you add, injectors, timing chain, rockers and other junk. It all depends on what you want to end up with and how much you have to spend.
Re: dead motor, what to do?
a used lt4 for 3k thats sounds really expensive. i have put 4 motors in other cars and never spent more than 600 bucks on a motor at a junk yard. never seen a price on an lt4 but that does sound pretty high. ill take your word for it. ok im dumb, whats a long block? what i want to end up with is a stout motor with a good amount of potential. i want at least 300hp to the wheels when i turn the key. i want to be able to put on a supercharger down the road if i felt like it or a big bottle of the happy gas.
the only thing i dont want to do is spend a ton of money and end up with a product that was worse than what i had in thier already. i have about 2k right now, i have all winter to finish the project, and i am willing to do what it takes to do it right. i am considering forced induction down the road so i might have to take that into consideration too. but mainly i am going to need to buy the motor either whole or not whole and put it togehter and in the car.

Re: dead motor, what to do?
A long block can mean different things to diff people. Some people say a long block is a complete short block=(block, crank, pistons, rods) and heads. Others might say its a complete motor from intake to oil pan. 300 hp to the wheels is nothing. For that all you need is a stock LT1 with headers, catback, CAI and maybe RR's. That should get you 300+rwhp. The problem comes that if you want a good reliable supercharged motor then you really should drop the compression ratio down. Doing so will cost you hp. So the car may not run that damn good with out a blower on it. A blower motor won't live up to its potential with out the blower. I think if you want a good reliable blower short block it would cost you close to 2k alone. I'm not familiar with forced induction but they put out lots of power so i'm sure you need a beefed up shortblock.
Re: dead motor, what to do?
junkyards?
u said u put 4 motors together and never spent over 600 bux at a junkyard on a motor?
well what u bought was most prolly a 'turnkey' motor with everything... i consider a longblock with everything but the turnkey things (starter, alt bleh bleh)

Re: dead motor, what to do?
i didnt know you guys were still talking about junkyard motors as long blocks
yes they were all turnkey motors. and the places i go to are very very good about not cutting things to save time.
how many miles should i be worried about having on this motor before i get it?

Re: dead motor, what to do?
i would say it is 383 time
i just finished my 383 install..and my AC pump is squeeking..so i will fix or delete that..but i am impressed with the 383..i should of went with a bigger cam..but i have around $3k in my motor and new stall, i done everything myself except machine work.

Re: dead motor, what to do?
like i said on my other post, ive come to the conclusion that im gonna buy a cheap lt1 trunkey motor, put that in and take my old block and do that up. hopefully i can do it right and i really would love a 383.
