Question Is a cutout a worthwhile purchase?

I just installed my catback a month or so ago and have been pondering the idea of an electric cutout. Having already installed and paid for a catback is a cutout going to give me much performance gain? What are your thoughts and opinions?

Thanks,

Mike

I installed a normal (non-electric) cutout a few years ago and it is my favorite mod. It only gave me a couple of tenths due to higher hp up high but I also lost a little bit of torque down low. BUUUUTTT, the great thing about cutouts on LT1s is the AWESOME growl it makes. It really rumbles when cruising and flat out roars when getting on it. I never cap mine anymore! I would recommend it. =)

ps GET RID OF THE 2.73 GRANNY GEARS!!!! lol you'll love the difference if you change them

Thanks for the quick comments! Sounds like most people that have one are happy. Are electric cutouts really that bad? Obviously I'd like something that is reliable..... How hard is it to run the wiring around the car? Sorry about all the questions!

Thanks again!

Mike

I know they suck ****.... it has to be one of the dumbest things to do to a sports car. I am onsidering going to either 3.23 or 3.42's. I need to maintain some good gas mileage. What would you recommend? .23's or 42's?

Thanks,

Mike

I've heard electric cut outs are a waste of money b/c once you hear it open you'll never want to close it. I think i'm going to get one put on this weekend.

An open cutout on the dyno nets me a 7RWH increase with an already free flowing exhaust. + it sounds pimp. I have 3.42's and I feel they are perfect for an auto car with heads, cam, NX.

Yeah, it is worth it. I think the cars sound so much better with them.

hehe I have 3.73s but I haven't had 20mpg in years. with the grannies I used to get 25mpg all highway but with the 3.73s it is down to around 18 all highway. I rarely take the car out on trips though so all my driving is city. in the city I get on average 13mpg. But thats only a bit worse than what I was getting before gears and other mods (all stock). I didn't notice a huge mileage differance after the gear mod. How bout all you other gear swappers?

no

cutouts suck and they sound like poo poo. If you like a 70s chevy pickup with a hole right after the header then go for it. Don't forget the disgusting shake it gives your car if you have it up far enough (before the cat) to really make the gain worthwhile.

Now if you can still take me seriously after that negative response, get the 3.42s because they will give you slightly better milage which is one of your priorities, be mucho cheaper out of an M6, and have darn close to the same gain as the 3.73s.

What about mounting the cutout a few inches behind the cat? It looks like it would be fairly easy to get to there and would net some pretty good gains. I am thinking about a cutout as well cause my exhaust isnt loud enough and I cant afford a cat back. Damn college!
