Cut out in the place where catalyst is??? Anybody did it?
Cut out in the place where catalyst is??? Anybody did it?
I have set of AS&M headers and 3" y pipe and hooker cat back. I have an idea about putting 3" electric cut out (DMH) in the place where cat is (just behind y pipe). The main reason for that is the sound!!! I know that it will give me 5 or so HP, but the scary sound is what I want...I heard the sound of open headers, and I love it. I don’t want to run it all the time, just to scare some Hondas and Rustangs on my way to work/school. So I thought that removing my cat and installing cut out will produce something similar to open headers. Of course 95% of the time cut out will be closed, so I will have quite exhaust when I want and loud monster when I need it...
Did anybody try this setup ( too loud???) Any sound clips??? Suggestions???
Thanks
ps. And yes I had cutout in my old car (but is just before the axle/after the catalyst) and in general I liked it but it was to quiet when open...Now want something really scary!!!

There are a lot of people who put their cut-out in place of their cat. I had to go to a muffler shop and get it done when I got my cut-out installed, but the guy said he couldn't put it in place of the cat because he is not allowed to mess with emissions on a vehicle. But yea you can put it there no problem. Just be prepared for a lot of vibration inside the car.
I know about vibrations, I had a cot out before..But I need to know how much louder it will be when installing cut out in the cat place than before the axle....

ps. I will do all the work my self, so no muffler shop is needed

It's going to be significantly louder if you place it in place of the cat than in the back over the axle. It is basically like just running headers and no exhaust at all, but not quite that loud. Go for it if you like the extreme loudness.
There will be less backpressure because there is not a lot of pipe the exhaust has to travel through, thus making it louder.

Like I said before it will be closed 98% (electric cut out) of the time..I will open it only when street race, to scare living hell out of all those Ricer crap hondas and rustangs..

Why??? I had off road pipe on my old Car (95 Z28 with mac mid headers) and I never had any SES light...Maybe tgis is because I had only 1 cat, not 2 like 96 up LT1...

I installed mine that way with a down and out tip to protect the undercaraige. I had 3 bolt flanges welded to my cat and then the cutout lengthened to match so now I can simply remove my cutout and replace it with the cat at smog time.
And yes, it is very impressive sounding when open, I only wish I could hook up, then it might be as quick as it sounds. I need to do a dyno pull and collect F/A data because I think it leans out too much at the top with it open. It pulls real well but pops after I back off at the end of a run and takes awhile to smooth out again.
I can't imagine ever being able to get away with it open around town though, any cop within ear shot (a mile) would know that it's not a full exhaust of any kind, and there isn't much of a chance of sneeking by at part throtle!

But I have 95 T/A so there is only 1 cat...Now I have High flow Cat with 3 bolt flanges welded to it, and I can remove it any any time. And I was thinking that I will make the offorad pipe (with cut out), the same way..So if I dont like it I will change it in no time..

obd2
93-95 hsd obd1 no o2 sensor after the cat and the obd2 had a sensor after the cat... this is why people covert 96-97 to obd1 because of this and tuning issues good luck and I bet it will sound awesome.
I just purchased some 17x11 wheels along with 315 yokohama AVS sport tires on the back, so I should hook up preety well
....
Thanks for info
