crank pulley? having problems
 

ok has anyone had any problems taking their crank pulley off of their lt1??? i've tried several different ways to get mine off and it won't budge...the pulley itself will come off if i unbolt the three bolts holding it to that thing on the nose of the crankshaft(don't know what its called). its so hard to get off i have pulled the threads on all three of those holes. so i had to get some longer bolts and put some nuts n the back side of it to try to pull on it with the pulley puller.

thats the only thing keeping me from getting the timing cover,chain,cam and crank out so i can get it to the machine shop. anyone have any suggestions??

You need a three pronged puller in order to get the hub off. I know Sears sells one for $20 and I think Autozone probably would rent you one. Here is the tool I used to get the hub off:

Its probably worth the investment if you ever need to get the hub off, its practically impossible otherwise.

yeah i rented one of those from advance auto parts and its not working..the three bolts that go through that puller into the hub, they just pulled the threads out of the hub. its really starting to piss me off,lol

The piece you're trying to get off is called the hub. There is a bolt in center of it which holds it to the crank. Have you taken that bolt out?

You can use a normal balancer puller to remove the hub, but you must insert a hardened rod or bolt in place of the center hold-down bolt for the puller to push against. The hub covers the end of the crank, except for the bolt hole (unlike a traditional SBC balancer).

someone have a pic of this or something? i don't recall seeing a bolt holding it in..

the only thing i see on the hub is on the backside of the hub where the sleeve or whatever you might call it that slides onto the crank..has four lil holes like someone took a punch to it an left punch holes in it..that look like it goes into the crankshaft...i'm not sure

but when i was trying t get it off, i looked into the nose of the crank, and didn't see a bolt..just a hole in there..

There is supposed to be a 7/16-20 x 2-1/4" bolt with a big washer in there. :)

nope no bolt at all, i even shined a flash light in there and stuck my pinky finger in there so see if there were even any threads and couldn't feel none at all.. i broke the pulley puller last night so i gotta go get another one...the dang that was 97 dollars from advance autoparts to rent..but now i own it since broke it.. really starting to get pissed off at whoever has this car before me
